I bought some breast pads off trade me and they are starting to smell Im wondering if I should throw them away or if I should be washing them in a special way. At the moment I put them in a mesh bra bag.
They are hemp breast pads with flannel top and pul backing.

Can you dry them in the sun and see if that clears it up?

I wonder if they should be washed, like cloth nappies, with only half the normal amount of washing powder, to prevent buildup? Do they smell all the time (ie, when dry) or only when they get damp again?

Maybe try a hot wash and, like Jess said, drying them in the sun if you can. You could also try washing them with a bit of tea tree oil...

I had to strip my ones once. You will probably find a thread on stripping in the cloth nappy area.

It's something like
-Hot wash
-cold wash with vinegar and baking soda
-cold wash with vinegar
-cold wash

I just did mine by hand in a bucket and chucked them in the last rinse cycle with my clothes. Then hung them up in the sunshine.

Also, I find my thicker ones get a bit funky smelling when they don't get completly dry so I often leave them in the hot water cupboard overnight.

ETA, once I tried washing them with Am-O-Lin which is what I use on Jody's nappies. I don't know why but that made them really stinky! Like a sour/off fruit kind of stink Yet Jody's nappies and clothes smell delish!
