Hi There,
I have just had the worst 2 days but thankfully it worked out well in the end.
On Sunday afternoon I started to have stomach pains (after getting some shocking news and upsetting news) and later in the evening while out at dinner I had some spotting and passed a blood clot, being my first pregnancy I was so scared. I rang my midwife who let me know my HCG levels (which were being monitored weekly) had gone down dramatically and if the pain or bleeding got worse to make my way to North Shore Hosp.
Eventually Hubby took me hosp where they checked me out said no more bleeding and did some bloods again another drop in HCG Levels. They dropped from 94,000 to 62,000 then at the hosp to 42,000.
My midwife and the doc at hosp told me to be prepared for the worst and there was hardly any chances of me having the baby with the HCG levels i had in my blood. They could not give me a scan at the hospital ( i still fail to see why!!!) and nothing else would be open till Tuesday.
I spent Sunday night and all day Monday worrying about my first baby and if he/she was still alive. Hubby and I were a mess.
This morning I rang Horizon Radiolgy to make an appointment as the hospital had faxed them the "urgent" referral form. What i got was no help and had in tears again on the phone to my midwife. They had not appointments available all week depsite the nature of the referral which said suspected miscarriage or missed abortion and when I asked if there was somewhere else I could go they said check the phone book and hung up.
I rang my midwife and she gave me the number for Auckland radiology on Lincoln road and told me there was a 90% chance I was going to get bad news and be prepared.
Finally after the last few days being hell I got my scan. It wasn't free but well worth the $25 I paid. The lady doing my scan was very happy to tell me that i had a healthy baby so far could not see any reason why I would miscarry and it was a viable baby. I got to see my baby even do a headstand while they tried to measure he/she. Spot on 11 weeks as per last scan dates. A very active little jelly bean measuring 4.10cm. They even gave me the scan on DVD and a whole page of pictures included in the $25 I paid.
Needless to say it was such a relief to get good news, hubby had come prepared for the worst with tissues and all. I used a few but for tears of joy. I will be paying $25 now when I need a scan and going to Auckland Radiology on Lincoln Road they were terrific, the lady talked through the whole thing tellng me exactly what was going on so different from my first scan with Horizon where they said nothing aside from how far along I was.

I also want to urge any mothers to be out there even if your HCG levels are dropping do not rely on this as a sign of miscarriage get a scan as soon as possible.

Jannat im pleased everything was OK with baby! Naughty baby giving you a fright like that!

Your nearly at the "safe" mark so hang in there, not long to go.

And I hope you are ok and recovering from both the news of baby and also the other news that upset you in the first place!

Thanks :) I had been to Horizon on Lincoln Road. Maybe I got someone on a bad day.
I am slowly recovering can't stop looking at scan pictures am going to watch the DVD of the scan shortly just to make sure it was all real.
I always though HCG levels were reliable and a sure sign of how things were going and that is what the doctor said to me....glad to say they were WRONG

I just looked it up and found this....

"During a normal pregnancy, the HCG levels will steadily rise throughout pregnancy. The HCG levels will peak around the 8th to 10th week of pregnancy and then decline until delivery. "

from this website

hcg website

so to me it sounds like you are ticking along quite nicely! bleeding can be quite common also

Wow that must have been hell, glad your bubba is safe and sound.

How rude of Horizon, no matter if the person was having a bad day or not, that is no way to treat a patient.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

I read this and the further I read, the more I hoped there would be a happy ending. How odd that HCG levels were dropping....but like someone mentioned....they drop after time. Although, you would think a dr. or scanner would hve the knowledge of this and tell you.

You should investigate why the hospital would not do a scan. I went to the ER one avo when I was arounf 16 weeks and the un-experienced ER dr. quicky performed a scan to confirm bub was moving. And it took her all of 5 minutes max.

Good luck for the rest of pregnancy!

Reading the above, when I see my midwife next I will ask about HCG's if that is normal then the Dr and my midwife put me through hell for nothing.
The ER doc in north shore said that as it was the long weekend and they saw no urgency they would not do one....but to me it was and emergency would have saved me 2 days of hell!!
I can't wait for my next scan they are so exciting

I had an awful experience at Horizon on the North Shore with my first pregnancy and vowed I would never go back.

I was 10 weeks pregnant and was told by the Sonographer that my pregnancy was measuring five weeks and four days and I should come back the next week so they could rescan and tell me if my pregnancy was viable.

I advised him there was no way I could be five weeks four days as we had been trying for a baby and my dates were spot on. He pretty much dismissed what I was saying and told me I would need to go back in another week.

He sent me away with mo explanation and after researching online I found out about blighted ovums which is what I actually had.

It was an awful experience and one I would never want to repeat or wish upon anyone else.

The following week I went to Auckland Radiology and was scanned by a lovely Man (Stephen I think his name was) who explained to me exactly what had happened and I have always gone back to AR ever since.

Aside from the above, that is wonderful news Jannat and I am glad that everything is ok with you now. All the best for the rest of your pregnancy :o)

Jannat - that is definitely right about hCG levels, I've had mine monitored in 2 pregnancies now and they do peak and then drop off around the stage where you are at now. That is also one theory as to why morning sickness often eases around that time - because the levels have dropped.

My hCG was only 33,000 at 14 weeks with lil miss when I had unexplained bleeding (which went on for 2 weeks) and the scans all showed a perfectly healthy baby.

ahh , I went to Botany Horizon, perhaps its one of the better ones ?

still , doesnt matter if they had a bad day or not , they should have been a lot more empathetic to a worried mum

thats interesting about the HCG levels, I didn't realise they start to decrease as you get further along

Lincoln Rd Horizon is sh*te. Really awful. I had to wait half an hour (and we had the first appt of the day!!!), no apology or explanation, yes it's a baby, get off the table now.
My MW doesn't recommend them either (I'd gone on the doctor's recommendation).
AKL Radiology, also on Lincoln Road, is fantastic. We had a guy too, who was fantastically patient with Z (who is 6) and answered every question and took him seriously. And allayed all my fears too.

Jannat, all the best for the rest of your pregnancy!

This is my first pregnancy too. I am just over 4 weeks pregnant and on friday i get to know my hcg level dropped to 144. It was all going well steadily. I am not having any cramps but was spotting through out on and off. I am not sure what to do. Doctor advised to wait and the miscarriage happen naturally. My next blood test is on wednesday, doc wants to make sure it is gone to zero.
But i am not feeling any pain. my boobs are still sore and i am feeling pregnant and this whole time i was taking things easy.
Just wondering is it possible medlab could have made a mistake on the blood test report?
i just dont want to loose my baby. I know if my hcg goes up in my next blood test, then doc will definitely call me to flush the uterus as they might consider this is an ectopic pregnancy.
I dont know what to do. Is it too early to get to know if everything is alright inside? or is it over for me?
Please can anyone help

IndiaNZ I hate to say this but I felt pregnant for a good four weeks after my miscarriage.

That said I do remember a member here having lowering HCG then it rising again.

Fingers crossed everything is ok and if your HCG has gone back up perhaps you could ask for scan referral to see whats going.

Jannat, I cant believe your midwife. Your HCG drops as said above by others. Mine went from 165000 at 9 weeks to 65000 at 10 weeks. Given I had a missed miscarriage 2 months earlier I requested a scan for peace of mind, but my midwife was not concerned at all. I just cant believe they told you to prepare for the worst!!!! I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly.

So far pregnancy is all good just had 12 week scan and all is fine.
IndiaNZ all i can suggest is that you request a scan when I was 8 weeks they did one for me but it was internal as its hard to see anything early on.
I am not sure what they can see at 4 weeks but it may give you peace of mind.
Best of luck

Thanks guys. thanks for your support.
The reality is i have been trying for 5 years now and i am only 32. We already had 3 cycles of IUI and i finally got pregnant. We were so happy when the nurse called to advise that i am pregnant but unfortunately i was bleeding the whole time, It was not heavy just on and off, so they decided to monitor the hcg level.
First hcg - 30 (nurse said its too low, and she was expecting atleast 50)
Second hcg - 114
Third hcg - 425 (nurse said she was exp aroung 450)
Fourth hcg - it dropped to 144.

I have my blood test tomorrow but now i am kind of sure it may not be on going, I am heart broken and very depressed.
I know it is too early for a scan anyway, i think i have to suck it up again
I always wished for a healthy and happy pregnancy but you never know what can happen.
My best wishes to everyone who are pregnant, Be happy and healthy.
