We went cold turkey, just like Peanut. It was at the 5month mark though as we didn't have problems till then.
I was determined not to get up in the night for a damn dummy and didn't want him to rely on it later on so thought it was a good idea.
I stupidly did it while DH was away, it was terrible but only took 3 nights I think and he was fine. He wouldn't even know now what the heck one was!
Having said that though, my son is a comfort sucker for sure and over the last couple of months has just started sucking his bear's ear but I figure that's his comfort toy and he doesn't lose it/throw it out of the cot (too much) and wake up for it so I don't care!
Good luck! Oh anyway, we did controlled crying to a degree and then I just let him CIO. I wasn't going to get him up etc as I thought that would just be replacing one comfort thing with another, and neither options I liked. Honestly, the first night is the worst and then it quickly gets better. I caved the first day as we were out and I just wanted to shut him up

so when we got home, I chopped the ends off them, and put them in the bottom of the rubbish bag so I couldn't be tempted.
Other options I've heard of is putting extra holes in so there's no suction, cutting off the ends slightly, or dipping them in a liquid they don't like (like juice or whatever but I'm guessing not for a 3mo baby!)
