Hi Ladies, I am into my fourth week of antenatel classes and are disappointed with the content covered. Its very 'birth' focused with one day dedicated to practical parenting (a two hr session!). Has anyone else out their been disillusioned (sp) with their class?

I think that is pretty standard. Ours have been the same but I didn't expect otherwise. There are other course you can do to learn parenting skills. Try your local Parents Centre.

I am glad someone else agrees with me! Also have people found coffee groups helpful? I find that meeting once a week is a little bit overkill...

It depends whether you like them or not

I personally never had a coffee group (other than the Jan/Feb OB Mummies) .. but I always enjoy meeting up with them.

The coffee groups were good. I didn't get a lot out of the AN classes ( but I did have a C-sect so not suprising really).

One recommendation I have is that a lot of hospitals have a free BFing workshop and I would try and get along to that if you can as they cover the BFing far more than the AN classes do.

Antenatal, as it suggests in the name, encompasses everything in the later stages in pregnancy leading up to and including labour. So that's why they're birth orientated

More beneficial would be a free parenting course instead of free antenatal classes IMO but the govt funds the AN ones.

As for coffee groups meeting once a week, if you haven't all had your babies, just wait until you have! I bet most people won't want to meet once a week for the first wee while. I personally prefer my coffee group (who I met through AN classes) every 2 weeks and then if we feel like catching up in between we do. Now that the kids are more active and we are a lot busier (some back at work full time, part time etc) once a week is too much of a commitment.
