OK, need to get this off my chest and hoping those of you who are using BLW can relate.
I was in McDonald's today, haqving a coffee with a friend, my nearly 8 month old daughter happily munching and sucking on a piece of apple. She got quite enthusiastic and took a too-big bite, which made her gag as it got stuck. She was gagging, yes, but still breathing so not actually choking. Completely normal behaviour, she likes to bite but hasn't perfected chewing yet. I popped her over my knee when she had trouble gagging it up, and she bought it up easily. The staff come running in, start treating me like a terrible mum for giving my child fruit, making a huge fuss because she's "choking", to the point my daughter is crying because she doesn't understand what's going on.
I'm quite capable of feeding my own child thank you very much, and perfectly able to cope with her needs. Why should I feel judged because I choose to feed my child in a way that is more natural?

Oh my goodnes if they think that about you what would the think about me. I have been giving solid apple bits to my son for the past three or so weeks and he's only a little over 7 months. Occasionally he bits a big bit of but he gags and its fine.
I think you are being a great mum for giving your child the opportunity to explore chewing and eating. They were probably all people who had never had children.

Deep breaths and a "thank you she is fine" while mentally giving the fingers is always a good thing!!

I understood that letting them learn to gag is actually quite good as they are then less likely to choke. So really you are doing a wonderful job of teaching your child. I can undestand the staff coming to ask if you and your daughter were ok but it sounds like they went OTT!

What is it with people, when your pregnant they think they can touch you without asking first and then once baby is born they all feel the need to tell how to do things etc. INFURIATING!!!!

They were probably freaking out that she may choke on their premises IYKWIM. McDonalds overseas has been sued for so many things it would not suprise me if they worry about stuff like that.

My line is that "gagging is a good thing, it's protecting his airway". to them.

Funny how they fussed about your fruit but didn't blink an eyelid when I gave Daniel some soft serve at 6 months

Baby - led - weaning, it's an alternative to the whole puree culture. You allow your child to eat "real" food, rather than mush. You stick with the same foods at the same stages, but it's much easier to include child at meal times. pieces of cooked carrot, bits of banana, kumara or potato "chips", bits of broccolli, sticks of steak, slices of ripe pear, just in manageable child friendly eat with your hand bits. Can be very messy!! But encourages coordination, and lets the child guide how much they really want to eat.

E.T.A. I don't just use BLW, I cook my own baby-food too, my girl's not very big so I do like to feed her when she will let me, or when she's super hungry.

I gave my daughter finger foods like you are talking about from about 7 months as well... she gagged a fair few times but didn't fully choke on anything... funny I thought it was normal to give them food in that form as well as some puree type stuff... My daughter is a fantastic eater now she can spoon feed independently and eat completely normal meals without any mashing etc (and has for awhile now)so can't have gone too wrong... Sounds like the staff were very OTT!! and as you say ignorant!!
