Ashleigh was born at 26 wks. Here is a bit of our story that Emma wrote. I'm not sure about survival rates at 30 wks but they were 80% at 26 wks so obviously would be even better. I guess it would also depend if the reason for prem labour is to do with you or the baby.

Ask away if you have any specific questions and I'll try and answer them    Good luck and stay strong

I had our twins at 36 weeks - only issues were having to teach one to suck (tube feeding via my little finger) and they both were jaundice and on bili-blankets. Are fantastic healthy little boys now - no major issues when born at this stage of gestation. Im sure you will be alright - have known a little boy to survive being born at 24 weeks gestation and is doing well. If born earlier, expect to be in hospital to closer to their due date.

All the best, hope it goes well.

Kobe was 34 weeks, my neice 32 weeks and nephew 28 weeks all all are fine. Obviously the 28weeker was in hospital for a long period of time but apart from him being little you wouldnt even know. It is a horrible feeling when you cant do anything but 30 weeks the chances of survival are right up there. Why might you be having bubs early?

My twins were born at 35 weeks. They were in incubators for 5 days for jaundice and maintaining body temperature. Eimear needed assistance breathing (CPAP) for 3 days and we were all home after 10days once breastfeeding had been established.
Aoife was 3lbs10oz when born, Eimear was 5lbs. Both tiny but so perfect

You and your DH/DP will be able to stay with bubs as much as you want.
I can only assume that NICU in Hamilton is the same but I felt extremely well looked after in Wellington hospital.

I was 31 weeks when my waters broke and managed to keep Callum in for a week longer before I started having full on contractions and he decided to come. When my waters first broke I was also given 2 steroid injections to help develop Callum's lungs.

Apart from Callum needing constant monitoring (and me having to be on a bed because of that) I had a completely normal labour, vaginal birth -seemed fairly easy only pushing out 1.92kg and felt great afterwards.

Callum was little of course and they had a paediatrician in the delivery room ready to check him over as soon as he was born. But he was breathing on his own when he arrived so I was able to hold him straight away for a couple of minutes before they checked him over (in the delivery room). After another cuddle he was taken away to the NICU - DH was allowed to go with him at the beginning but then we had to leave him .. I'm sure things are different in NZ though, they're a bit funny here

Callum was in the NICU for 9 days before he came home - he had regained his birth weight and was feeding well before he came home. He spent a couple of days under the bili lights, and was on a warming bed thing to help with his body temp for the first 3 days and then into a normal hospital crib.

We just took Callum to the Well Baby clinic today and he's 4.34kg - his adjusted age is 5 weeks and you wouldn't know he was prem now - unless you know his birthday

Sorry for the ramble! Good luck. It can be a bit scary at times, ask as many questions as you like

Yes I did go into spontanous labour. They managed to hold off delivery for 4 days but I was contracting the whole time. I had a normal vaginal birth. Once she was out they took her over to a bed thing with warming lights above and gave her oxygen for a few minutes until they were comfortable she was doing ok, then let me give her a kiss and put her in the incubator still giving her oxygen. DH went with her up to NICU then came back down to me after an hour or so when she was all settled. Yes both parents can come and go any time you like, day or night. In Middlemore they had nice big leather lazyboys so it was nice and comfy to sit there. You do need to remember to keep your own strength up though and as hard as it is, you do need breaks and to sleep and eat. Also Ty prob won't be allowed in the NICU so you'll obviously need to spend time with him. But they are well cared for in NICU and no-one will be walking around with him!

I imagine baby will be in an incubator to start off with as it keeps their body temp up. Ashleigh was allowed to be transferred into a "bed" when she was 1800g and able to maintain her own body temp. But they are fine and have little flaps that fold down so you can put your hands in and change nappies and just hold their hold or whatever    Good luck and keep us informed!

Yeah mine was the same, had a normal v birth although it was a ventouse delivery in the end and I had to stay on the bed cos he needed monitoring but they put him on my chest as soon as he came out but only for a minute cos they werent happy with his breathing so put him into the incubator and got him to NICU but hubby went with him and came back down later once he was settled and they brought me some photos they took of him which was cool. I was really scared with the incubators, as in shoudl you touch them, pick them up etc... and the nurses seem to have different ideas. some said as much contact as possible was good while others said not to disturbe him and i found this was the same with my neice and nephew. Once they can regulate thier own temperature and of the cpap they are a bit easier to hold but depending on when you go into labour bubs might be ok with that anyway so might not be in the full incubator for long.

I had Noah and Lola at 35weeks they new I was going to have them early or they were going to do a c section as I got toxicamia, so I was given the steroid injections but I went in to labour naturally and had them 3hrs later no drugs, they let me cuddle them both for awhile and then they took them to SCBU where they stayed for 10 days mainly just to get there feeding sorted, We were able to stay with them as long as we liked no mater what time of the day or night it was.

Dominic came at 36 weeks and did really well his apgar scores were 9 and 10. He was quite jaundice and had to be on a billibed for a couple of weeks but we hired one from River Ridge birthcentre and they let us take him home at 37wks.
He did try to come at 34weeks and we had a great whoping shot of steriods and medication to stop my contractions, my cervix remained open through so I think I he did well to hang in for another 2 weeks.

Tys mummy - 30 weeks is a pretty ok age in terms of mostly being all formed and ok-ish. There is a very large range within that age of things that may or may not happen, and the longer you hold on the better, however,   in answer to your questions...

Yes at this age, baby would likely be put straight in incubator, would roughly be probably about 1.2 - 1.6 kgs maybe more if they think that baby was bigish anyway.   if they are planning on getting baby out early they would likely plan to give you steriods to help babies lungs - these are a complete godsend, and from what i've seen, do tend to make a difference.

at 30 weeks, most babies do tend to need maybe a little breathing help even just for a couple of days, this might be oxygen, or it might be some cpap (a continuious pressure to help lungs stay inflated well and stop baby having to do too much work)
usually for first 24 hours, they just put baby on iv fluids.. then if well they start feeding by trialling 1 ml of milk every 4 - 6 hrs etc, progressing upwards.   The main thing for these babies once they have the breathing sorted is uaully just growing, maintaining their temp (incubator care is usually needed up to about 34/35 wks if born at this age as the baby has not yet laid down the brown fat needed to regulate their own temp), and getting feeding sorted, so if you plan to bf, get expressing straight after birth as soon as you are physically up to it.

I hope this hasn't scared you and good luck. it's not all plain sailing but baby is a pretty ok age really - as i said the longer you hold on the better.

My baby came at 34 weeks - there was no issue about his health or anything it was more about breathing, regulating body temp and feeding

he was in incubator for 2 days - then 10 more days before he could come home - he was a whopping 6lb 6 (2895g) when born but they say its not the weight its the gestation. You do have to express milk so make sure you hire a electric breast pump when not in the hospital any longer - we had to search for one on christmas eve so was a bit frantic.

he was very well looked after in wellington - you do get some conflicting advice - but just take it all in your stride and not take everyones ideas as the only way.

They just need lots of sleep and very little stimulation.

i got to hold him on the first day and try breastfeeding so the bonding is still there.

Hi Ty's mummy

Luke and Zavier were 28w 5d when I had them by C-Section. They were born early after having Twin to Twin transfusion. I had steriods from 25w to mature their lungs, so when they were delivered they were able to breathe on their own, and had CPAP for about a week, which suprised the doctors :)
They went straight into the incubator from birth, and we were allowed to hold them after 5 days. They were 1.28 and 1.24kg when they were born.

They stayed in the incubators for weeks. I think they were allowed out of them at about 34 weeks? Once they are able to regulate their own body temp. They turn the incubators down gradually each day.

It's scary at first cause they hook them up to iv'S and heart monitors beep and oxygen sat's are monitored. But you get used to it.

I wish you all the best! If you want to see some pics of our monkeys when they were born, I have pics in the Twins/Triplets Picture Forum

I also had my first baby early - he tried to come at 30 wks, I had my show and all, they gave me steriods to stop him. I managed to hold on until 34 wks and then went into full on labour. It was fairly quick, and he weighed 5lbs 8ozs which isnt tiny for 6 weeks early.
They whisked him away and straight under the heat lights and into an incubator. It is hard because its not the birth experience you think you will be getting thats for sure. But my wee boy was fine, he needed to be taught to suck and did have to have a feeding tube up his nose for a couple of days, but he is now a strapping 11 year old and you would never know he was a prem baby !!
