    Posted: 05 July 2006 at 10:07pm
I am a bit of a planner and have big time baby fever but my hubby and I are waiting to start our family until next year. I would love to start trying now but I also am really grateful for the time I have now and also the time to prepare my body for it all. I often feel a little silly for thinking about babies so much. Wondering if there were any others in a similar position?

Well, we may be a bit sooner too. I'm just finishing off my last pill pack now.
It is odd how much I am already obsessing too!

We're both 28, and I would like to have my first baby before I'm 30, so given that it may take a while, I think we are best to start trying now.

We both SO want kids, but it's still such a tough decision about WHEN. We're doing okay financially at the moment, but it will be pretty tight when we do have only one income. Plus, we'd like to go live/work in Aussie at some point, so not sure when we are best to do that either...

Sorry about the novel, but good to vent with people in similar situations!!

So good to hear there are some others in the same position. I have been off the pill since March last year due to problems with it. My hubby and I use the Fertility Awareness Method to avoid getting pregnant at the moment. It involves taking your waking temperature and observing your other fertility signs to determine when ovulation has occurred.
I am a teacher so we want to get pregnant next year after April so that I could finish the school year before going on maternity leave.
What are you guys doing to prepare for pregnancy?
Apparently many people get pregnant pretty quickly after coming off the pill so it may happen sooner than you think

Hello, I can so relate to you guys. I was never EVER a clucky person, not even that into kids, but all of a sudden all I can think about is babies babies babies. It's insane! We are not in the best financial state for a new addition to the family just yet so I am trying to hold off trying to get preg until at least the end of this year....but that biological urge is pretty powerful.

We did plan on TTC next year so we could have another child at the end of next year (due to me wanting to go back to Teachers college). But it didn't work for me. I ended up pregnant this May.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I've turned into the most clucky thing which is totally opposite compared to how I felt about kids a year ago We are actually now in a position where we could actually have kids because we have a bigger house as of last weekend whereas we were in a stuffy townhouse that was far too tiny for a child as well.

Good luck girls!

re what I am doing to prepare...
Well, since we are looking at trying pretty soon, I've started taking folic acid supplements. I think the recommended dose is 400mg, and the ones I've got are only 300 (just supermarket ones), but I figure it's better than nothing. And once I get preg I will get some different preggie multivits or something.

Other than that, just trying to eat reasonably well and exercise a bit. We're doing up the house at the moment anyway, so should be all nicely done by the time we have any new additions. Although we would like to move from the area we are currently in, so we'll see.

The dosage of folic acid recommend in NZ is 800mcg littlejo. The ones you buy from the supermarket are only 300-400mcg which is all they are legally allowed to put in what is a 'dietary supplement'. The 800mcg are available from your chemist, from memory it was about $8 for 4 months worth. I didn't realise the dosage thing until I saw an article on 'Close Up' when we were TTC.

Here is an article for you on it

http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/publications/media-releases/2006-03-28.htm

Hope that helps and good luck with your TTC journey.

Thanks for that article.
There is just too much advice out there - never know if I'm listening to the right thing. I've definitely read in a few places that it was 400! Such as:
http://www.5aday.co.nz/health/birthdefects.html
and
http://kidshealth.org/parent/pregnancy_newborn/pregnancy/folic_acid.html (not NZ though)

Hmmm, and just had a nosey on the healtheries site (I think thats what mine are), and under pregnancy it says take them 3 times a day. But on the pack it just says one a day!!
So, I'm upping my dose as of today. And will get those pharmacy ones next time.
Thanks again. Good to find these things out before actually really into the TTC phase!!

If you go to your DR you can get a script for folic acid the 800mg amount and if you have a community services card it will only cost $3.

Hey there,

We are also ttc next year. would be keen anytime but as we are both school teachers it makes since to start trying around feb march as then I can se out most of the school year and hubby gets the christmas hols with a new bub. It comes down to finance as well!!

I heard that yous hould get a dentist check up and check that you are immune to all sorts of things (blood tests) before starting to try so that any problems can be cleared before starting. Not sure how true that is!!

Yeah, we are still 2 months out from TTC. But I have it all planned out - if we were *miraculously* to fall pregnant first cycle, then we will have enough saved to cover 6 months of mortgage, which will take us through to cover what we need.

But I hear you on the baby thing. I am one of those people who gets their head focussed on something then obsessess. But hey, it means that we will be ready when it happens, doesn't it? Poor hubby shakes his head bemusedly when he sees me on baby related sites. Which is kinda often.

Oh - and sorry to double post, but I reread some posts, and I went for a pre-ttc visit to the doctors and after discussion decided on Elevit - it isn't subsidised (at least not not non community card people like me) but has the 800mg of folic acid and also some other vitamins that are safe to take when pregnant. I like the idea that it will lift my levels of these to a good level before we start, then keep them there when it happens. Plus you have to be careful with general multi's as there are some things you shouldn't take too much of.

Hi Miss,

Is it a good idea to go along and see a doctor to both be checked before TTC? What does this involve?

We are looking to start trying in the next few months too. Hopefully we won't have too much trouble, but then you never know till you start trying do you. I can't wait!!

Hey Tyler, I think it is a good idea. My doctor was very impressed with me coming in to see him too. I have had blood tests done to look at different levels in the blood: hormones, iron and also ruebella. Because I teach and get exposed to childhood illnesses I wanted to check that my level of immunity was high enough. If you have to have an immunisation you shouldn't TTC for a month (they used to say 3 months but have recently revised it).

They will also give you info pamphlets and you can talk about your family history. Because I have an irregular cycle I am tracking on fertility friend now, and I feel having the doctor involved will make things move faster, should there be any issues. I have already had a scan last year for PCOS - luckily that was negative and my ovaries looked good, so hopefully that means I do ovulate even though I am irregular.

I haven't bothered with taking hubby to the doctor though, he just needs to eat sensibly and stay fit, which he is doing anyway.

I just thought of a tip for the hubby's which may or may not have helped (research says it does)...and we did conceive first month trying
Get your hubby a zinc supplement. Mine took the Blackmores BioZinc once a day.

Just writing to confirm that the dose of folic acid that is reccommended in NZ is 800mcg. Watch websites as a lot of their infomation will depend on what country they are based and not always correct. Elevit is great too, but watch out as some women shouldnt take it in pregnancy because of the iron. And zinc is great for male fertility as well as selenium..... sorry the Pharmacist coming out in me
