I am about 7 weeks along and need to think about a LMC and I am a little lost as to which option would be better. I know only 1 thing and that is that I am not giving birth without pain relief.

Any thoughts to help me make up my mind?

Its totally a personal choice. If you're keen on the pain relief then you'll have to give birth in a hospital but it can still be with a MW or OBYN.

A MW is free but I would reccommend getting in now and booking one as the popular ones full up quickly.
I've personally gone for a OBYN as I don't want any 'if only' moments - I'm not planning on doing this often so for a few thousand dollars I'll have all my bases covered.

I was wondering the same thing a little while back so here is the post and responses that i got....

MW vs OB

I ended up going with a MW, mainly becuase of cost but also cos if anything was going wrong or i needed to see a specialist i have full confidence that my MW would refer me anyway. I am pleased i made that decsion and feel like i will develop a really good relationship with my MW that i mite not have had with an OB.

I am 7 weeks too, and wondered the same thing but here are the reasons why we chose to stay with MW

1. Cost. Having a new baby is going to stretch us enough as it is, and there are many more things we can do with $2-3K.

2. A GOOD MW should know when to refer you in the event of it becoming necessary anyway. We have managed to get one of the best MWs in our area, and I am confident she knows her stuff and has a good relationship with the specialists in this area.

3. MWs are trained in this one area and one area only. The experienced ones have seen alot, and they deserve credit for that.
They are also accountable for mistakes, i think someone in the other thread didn't think they were.

4. We conceived really, really quickly (first time unprotected sex) and I am healthy- there is no history of any kind of problem, so I can't see any medical reason to have a specialist. If there was, I might feel differently.

PS- I also like the idea of consistency and you do get that with a MW.

Funnily enough, I am a health professional and DH was the one pushing for an OB, but he changed his mind when I listed the reasons above. I don't refer my patients to a specialist for routine care, only when i feel it is necessary and I personally feel this is the same thing.

each to their own though, might feel different if we actually HAD a spare $4K!!!
