Topic: how long should inserts last? Posted: 26 February 2009 at 1:31pm |
Am I expecting too much? I wouldn't think that Jack was a heavy wetter (although I don't really have anyone else to compare him to) but a hemp trifold sometimes doesn't even last 2hrs! I moved to pockets as I thought I would be able to use microfibre inserts and have a trim nappy but most of the day I have him in a hemp trifold and a mf insert so that they last at least 3hrs.
Am I expecting too much from the inserts?

Are the hemp trifolds new? Could be they need more washing to get up to proper absorbancy? Or could be to do with speed of absorbency - from what I understand hemp and bamboo are slow absorbers but hold more, while microfibre is a fast absorber but holds less. So I always have some microfibre in there anyway to soak up wee straight away, with the hemp or bamboo there to soak away from the microfibre iygwim. I love the ecobubs trifolds with microfibre on one side and hemp on the other, I'm planning to make myself a bunch of those. One of those folded together with a plain bamboo velour trifold lasts all night, and JJ is a heavy wetter.

No the inserts are at least 6mths old I would think, I don't think it is a soap build-up either as they have pretty much always been like this. At night Jack has a hemp trifold and 2 MF inserts, he has only ever leaked once and that the was the other night.
How many layers in total are the ecobubs trifolds? I was thinking to make some more inserts once we move so could have a look at making some of these

The ecobubs trifolds I have are only one layer of hemp (but it's a nice thick thirsty hemp fleece) and one of microfibre, so folded up gives six layers total. I just measured them and they're approx 36cm square. The bamboo ones (I got them from mothers instinct) are two layers of bamboo/cotton velour. Interestingly looks like standard ecobubs inserts these days are microfibre only.
Since I've already got the fabric (man prewashing all that hemp was a mission) I'm making a whole pile of them, and they're cheap as chips that way, I'd be happy to pop a couple in the post for you if you want so you can see if they'll work

Thanks for the offer but I am going to make SIL some inserts so will just do mine at the same time. Will definately try a few hemp/mf combos.

Foxybots also sell a hemp/mf trifold, and I think Wigglebums might do too.
Otherwise you could try just adding a microfibre cleaning cloth to your hemp trifolds - you can buy them really cheaply in bulk at Mitre 10 Mega and if you put it on top it might be all you need to do the quick soak before your hemp absorbs the majority of wee. That's all I used to use to boost my nappies in the day as they're super slim

My little girl wets through at night in disposbles and three mf inserts.
I have now bought Honeychild insert (4 layers) and two at night in a ecobubs wool pocket and it will last till shet gets up in the am (12 hrs) or i use the ecobubs microfibre insert (it snaps in half) with bmboozle bamboo insert inbetween the layers which works also.
Good luck
