Topic: Things that help swimmers Posted: 20 February 2009 at 2:57am |
I read somewhere that diet and exercise can help a guys swimmers - is that true? Is there anything else that can? And anything that a woman can do to help her "environment" be more alkaline (or receptive!!) than acidic???

I had two male friends that decided they were ready for babies, and had heard that eating pineapple helped male fertility, so they ate and ate and a month later, both had pregnant ladies!! I always thought it was an old wives tale, but there might be something to it.......

I've heard preseed is a swimmer friendly lube - I haven't used it myself cos I hadn't heard of it until recently but I reckon I'd use it next time. Might also help for those days when you're really not in the mood but its the right time....

I've tried to make DH cut back on alcohol as I'm sure drinking can't help the swimmers.

Isn't drinking fizzy drink/coke before you go to bed (for men) supposed to help wake the spermies up too?

Here is some info off my vasectomy reversal website I go to, it has lots of suggestions for swimmers.
Dr. Marks Sperm Healthy Life-Style Guidelines:
1. No heat to the groin area. This includes no hot tubs, hot showers, Jacuzzis or hot saunas. It takes 74 days to make sperm so avoid heat for approximately 3 months prior to trying to conceive or checking a semen analysis.
2. Stay well hydrated.
3. Eat a healthy balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
4. Eat beef three times a week.
5. Try to ejaculate approximately every 24-48 hours, to keep the system revved up.
6. Avoid testosterone replacement and all male hormone/androgen supplements. These can drastically reduce and even zero-out your sperm count. Most often these counts return overtime, but some men remain sterile permanently.
7. Absolutely no tobacco in any for.
8. Absolutely no marijuana or other drug use, as these are associated with reduced testosterone levels and poor sperm counts and morphology (can be an indication of chromosomal abnormalities).
9. Alcohol in moderation. Excess or binge drinking or heavy drinking is associated with significant sperm toxicity.
Anti-oxidants
1. Selenium 200 micrograms once a day
2. Vitamin C, 250-500 mg, 3 times a day
3. Vitamin E 400 international units once a day
4. Zinc 50-100 mg once a day
5. Coenzyme Q10 30-50 mg once a day
6. Folic acid 400 micrograms a day
7. B complex once a day
8. Fish oil capsules, 2-3 times a day
9. Multivitamin with trace minerals once a day
Hope this helps.

I am not sure about the soy milk theory as we are going through a Natro path and hubby is on a detox that has no dairy so he has soy yoghurt and soy milk. Natropath know we are trying to increase his fetility and has not said anything about the no soy.

okay this is a little off topic but then it is all about helping the wee swimmers on their way
please avert your eyes for a little TMI!
okay here goes they often suggest to give the swimmers a helping hand when you are bding that the women needs to have an orgasm ... what they don't tell you is for some women it is better if this happens before the man ... (this is the TMI bit) if you are a women who 'releases' some fluid of your own on orgasm then if you are second then you could possibly be 'washing' the sperm away
okay hopefully haven't grossed anyone out with that!

Interesting. I have read it all out to DH - he is already doing most. Unfortunately his major vice is smoking and he isn't ready to give that up yet - has to be something he wants

Purpledragon, yeah there was an article in the Herald a couple of years ago saying that soy milk decreased spermies, but after doing a quick google on the subject, it seems that some scientists say yes, some say no. I also read this and watched the vid a couple of months ago:
http://natural-fertility-info.com/fertility-one-more-reason-to-not-eat-soy.html
But after speaking to my naturopath who says soy is fine, DH and I are back on soy (we love our soy lattes!) and DH's SA came back 100% perfect!

Treen, glad to hear hubbys swimmers are doing just fine, hope you get your BFP soon.
Hope2be, it is frustrating, but if other people who drink and smoke can still get pregnant, then there is always hope.
choco69, I have heard the orgasim theory. But have not tried it, this whole ttcing thing is hard enough with the charting and temping, OPK's and the like.

I just got a newsletter from FA and it says for guys to eat a diet with healthy antioxidants. Food rich in antioxidants can reduce the damage that free radicals can have on sperm.
It also says Vit C, E, selenium and zinc could possibly improve sperm . There was a study that showed men taking menevit for 3 months before IVF/ICSI had better pregnancy rates than those on a placebo.
It says less than 20 units of alcohol a week is recommended as large quantities reduces sperm production.
Lastly, obese men have a 20% lower sperm count but it's unknown if it's a hormonal effect or due to heat.
