Topic: A warning on natural remedies Posted: 18 February 2009 at 9:27pm |
Hi girls,
For the past 4 - 5 weeks I've been having a "fertility" smoothie for breakfast every morning. The contents include Vitamin C, Maca, Spirulina, Flax Seed Oil, Kefir, 1 banana, blueberries and rice milk. Now for the past 3 weeks I've been violently ill with bloating, nausea, diarrhea (sorry, TMI), headaches, you name it. DH suggested it might be the smoothies about a week ago but I dismissed it thinking if anything, the smoothies will be keeping me healthy.
However, after power chucking on the bathroom floor yesterday, I decided to bypass the smoothie this morning and guess what? I feel 100%!
Just thought I'd let you all know that sometimes going all natural can turn against you!

This is very true as not everyone body accepts things the same as someone else. Whats fine for one may not be so for others and whenever taking any medication, natural, traditional or pharmacutical, if it's making you feel grotty, stop taking it.

Treen - sorry to hear it has been so rough on your system! Did a naturopath prescribe the smoothie 'formula' for you?

I got the recipe from a video off naturalfertilityshop.com and used the minimum daily dosages suggested on the packets of all the supplements. I also made sure that all of the powdered supplements were natural and not synthetic nor past their expiry date and I bought them from an expensive organic shop. I did everything right, but there must have been something in them that my body didn't agree with.
I was just silly thinking that it couldn't possibly be my healthy smoothie, so I continued drinking them. I'm still right into my natural products, but now I realise that I have to be careful with them also!

hmmmm can i blame preconception vitamins for feeling crappy? i've had a month of blackmores conceive well, then changed to elevit last week, the elevit has the worst side effects but i've never felt so bloated (all the time!) in my life.

Its scary how every body is different and we all react to things differently. It just goes to show that what may be ideal for one can be rubbish for another.
Hope you feel better Treen
Lizzie - I have been taking Elevit for 3 months now and apart from dark stools (sorry TMI) from the iron in it I haven't had any other symptoms. Again, different for every person

for bloat try some yoghurt it works well.
You have to remember that just because something is natural it isn't always good for us, It can do harm or you can react to it.

Lizzie - I've heard lots of people have similar reactions to the Elevit. Some people suggest taking them at night.
Given that so many of these fertility enhancing herbs etc can actually be bad for you during pregnancy I wouldn't take anything unless it was under the supervision of some health specialist.

Wow that is scary!! I was taking the concieve well and felt really nauseous every morning and felt constantly yuk, then when i figured it wasnt cos i was preg, i stopped taking them and i felt fine
I have been taking the elevit and they arent giving me any side effects at all.........but cos they are so expensive im just taking folic acid and gonna save the elevit for when i am actually preg
My friend actually gave me the elevit cos she couldnt take them through her pregnancy cos they gave her a bad stomach and diarohea etc............
So i suppose we all can take heed from this, that just cos one didnt work for one, it may just well work for you and vice versa!!
Hhmmmmmm now i feel like a smoothie just reading about them.........but just a normal one........but am doing circuit tonight so dont think its a good idea to have that slosh around........

I vomited on a banana/spirulina smoothie once, can't stomach that stuff again.
It might be healthy but your stomach doesn't necessarily know that.
