Not not together.

My Mum has an easy homemade icecream recipe using whipped cream, condensed milk and a crunchie bar - frozen together - what are you thoughts on the food safely issue on this one?

Also what are the risks with hummus? I thought it was just the deli stuff to avoid, but going thru the list of "safer foods' today saw all hummus was a no go. For piece of mind should I just treat it like I would eating "the bad foods" prior to knowledge and obviously not go there again

I'd eat both! I'm sure anything frozen is fine, as long as you made the icecream and froze it straight away (and gave me the recipe while you were at it

Hummus I would eat fresh (ie a container just opened from the supermarket or if homemade then made that day) but not eat it once it's been sitting open in the fridge.

Seriously though, can I have the icecream recipe please?

They say the risk with hummus is the tahini in it, as it is a 'long life' food and there have also been some recalls in recent months due to listeria in the tahini of certain brands.

That's not to say that all hummus containing tahini is contaminated though, I have been eating it - I can't have my kebabs without it! I just make sure it is all used up or then thrown out within 24hrs.

I'd probably (personally) just go ahead and eat the icecream too.

I'd eat the ice cream as long as it doesn't have raw eggs in it. DH's ice cream maker uses raw eggs

If the hummus is store bought then I would eat it within 2 days of opening

The ice cream would be fine and you best be putting that recipe in here soon!!!!!!

Much the same thoughts as everyone else on the hummus, store bought or home made I would be consuming within 24 hours of opening....

Mmmm homemade hummus is yummy.

I often make hummus without tahini, but with a bit of peanut butter, so you can get round that.

And that icecream sounds divine - post the recipe!!

Hmm I don't remember that...just had a look on the nzfsa website and you're right, it says not to eat it. I've been eating hummus the whole time though, and will continue to do so.

Just googled it and all I can find is things saying that it's a good thing to eat during pregnancy because of the nutrients in it!

Pearls ( I believe) is right in saying that its the Tahini in the hummus that is unsafe to eat, and if you make it yourself and replace the tahini with peanut butter as Flissty suggested you should be fine, although I would still consume it within 24 hours.

And homemade icecream is a no-no if its made in the traditional methods (like Linzy said) with egg yolks, but mmmmm......yours sounds like its fine to eat so am off to check out the recipe!

How long has hummus been a no no on the NZFSA food list? I had no idea and have been eating hummus the whole time... I am sure it wasn't in my NZFSA book....

Don't worry Mel I've been eating it too. I don't remember it being in the book at the start of my pregnancy either, maybe it's a recent thing?

I don't get why tahini wouldn't be safe to eat? Isn't it just ground up sesame seeds? (thanks google)

AuntieSarah - as pearls said it has a long shelf life, its made from a natural product (sesame seeds) and (most commonly) doesn't contain any preservatives or hasn't been heat treated etc. The risk comes from the fact that it sits around for a long time, like they don't recommend eating pre-prepared salads etc as you aren't sure how long its been sitting there.

In saying that, its up to the individual what they eat, I indulge in certain items of food that are deemed unsafe, within reason. Sometimes there are things that a gal just can't help but have

Homemade ice cream that has egg yolks in it is often cooked first you make a custard cool it add the rest of ingrediants and freeze. So i would think that as long as the egg is cooked it would be fine
