Topic: Tips for last month of work Posted: 26 January 2009 at 7:18pm |
I have about a month left of work before maternity leave (by which time I will be about 37-38 weeks pg). It feels like my motivation and brainpower have gone South, replaced by feeling bulky and tired all the time! What are some ways to help the next month go as well as possible?
So far I have:
Take iron supplement (as prescribed)
Make sure you drink plenty of water during the day
If you start feeling achey, get up and move around
Pack plenty of snacks so you can eat whenever you need to

I think your pretty sorted but If you can get something to put your feet up on when you are sitting at your desk and jandals are a pregnant girls best friend at work (if your getting the dreaded swollen footsies)
It's my last week this week, YAY!!!

My midwife told me to use my sick leave - she said to take each Wednesday off because lasting through two days of work then having a rest leaves you much more energised than having to struggle through 4 days of work then having Friday off or whatever. A good option if you have enough sick leave owing

I like the sick leave idea! Otherwise you're already doing everything I've tried. Thank god this is my last week, I've had exactly the same motivation and concentration problems!

I took Wednesdays off from 28 weeks (had lots of AL) and it was a life saver. My last 2 weeks - 35/36, I just did 2 days a week. At that point I had no brain, a humongous stomach and couldn't wait to get out of there! I found the reduced hours worked magically at keeping me going, though if you've got 3 wee girls at home, work might be easier

I definitely liked the using the sick leave. I would take a Thursday afternoon off sometimes - otherwise I'd spend ALL weekend trying to regain my strength.
I liked to make lots of lists too - things to do pregnancy-wise and things to complete work-wise before my final day. I found "to do" lists a bit of a life saver as my mind turned to squish.
Do you have a sick bay at work - I used to go there, shut the door and zone out for a morning tea or lunch break - it got me away from all the curious people and also helped my swollen feet when I put them up.
Also make sure you have your antacids / prescription drugs everywhere you go - work, handbag, car, home etc - that is if you need them.
Ah - one more thing - if you feel your hands starting to gradually swell day by day, now is a good time to remove your rings while you still can!

I used up some holidays to reduce the hours I was working each week. I would take 1 or 2 part days off each week. The annoying thing is I wasn't able to do anything fun with my time off, as I usually just slept, but I wouldn't have made it through the week otherwise. In my last week (which was last week) I actually only worked afternoons, and I felt much better for it.

I also used sick leave to have 1 full day off a week, in the last 2 weeks i also worked reduced hours again using sick leave up (i was lucky, i got my years worth in the last month again so used it all). Like Ella i didnt do anything exciting but the rest was worth it.
Otherwise I'd say just try and take it as easy as possible. Enjoy your last month!!
