    Posted: 20 January 2009 at 7:46pm
I had my first midwife appointment today. According to my dates and scan I'm 11 weeks 6 days pregnant. She wasn't able to hear the heartbeat with the doppler....is that normal??

I have had a dreadful feeling for the last 24 hours and not sure what it is related to but not hearing the heartbeat hasn't helped!

When is your 12 week scan? Hopefully that will ease your worries.

My midwife said I was lucky to hear the heartbeat at about 11 weeks as apparently that is still quite early. I'm not sure what the norm is though.

I think thats normal, mine didnt even check until 12 and a half weeks. I think that the uterus is only just coming above your pubic bone at this time and depending where bub has settled it may be a bit early to hear at the moment.

When do you see her again?? Could you go in a week or so just to ease your mind??

Someone else asked the exact same question not long ago......Can't remember what it was called though....

Don't fuss chick. It's quite normal not to hear it yet. I had feelings of dread early on too but it was just my mind playing tricks on me. My MW didn't even try to hear the HB until about 12-13 weeks cause she said she didn't want to scare me if we couldn't hear it.

It could also depend on where your placenta is lying. My mw tried at 13w and could only get MY heartbeat via the placenta, but today (19w4d) we got it loud and clear! Didnt last long as the little so and so went and hid behind the placenta again!

It can be another 2 weeks from what I've heard. The scan will be more accurate.

She said she could clearly hear the blood flowing through the placenta / umbilical cord but I'm not sure if that is a reassuring thing or not.

Fiona, my SIL didn't hear her first until 16 weeks. In the end they did a scan, and all was well, he was just hiding from it!

Congrats BTW - heres to a happy and healthy pregnancy!

i first heard heartbeats at 16wks and 14+4wks......so it's probably just too early.
interestingly for me, they were both beating at exactly the same rate

Fiona congrats on the pregnancy. My MW didn't hear heartbeat until after 12 weeks. Can't remember when exactly though. I think DH found it before she did with our angel monitor doppler.

My mw heard the heart beat at 11 weeks - but pre-warned me that there was a strong possibility that she wouldn't hear anything at that stage as quite often it is too early...

My MW didn't find any heartbeat at 11weeks and that was with twins.

Also even when I was in hospital getting 2 CTGs a day the nurses would have difficulty in finding the babies heartbeats.

ETA: I got the same dreaded feeling at 10 weeks when my MS miraculously disappeared and I didn't feel pregnant anymore.

I'm with everybody else, you're lucky if you hear it that early, think it's the norm not to for a few more weeks yet. Try not to stress!

Yep didn't even try to hear mine till after about 12 weeks I think. And my feeling of dread kicked in between hearing the heartbeat for the first time and the 20wk scan...it was a looong wait lol.

All good! 12weeks 3 days (a little further than the initial scan indicated). Bubba is a perfect little wriggler! Placenta is anterior (at the front) so doppler might not pick up heart for a while.

Thanks ladies :)
