I hope I don't offend anyone and no matter what I will love my baby girl but I am so worried right now. Ever since my baby was born she was sticking her tongue out. But when she was sleeping it wasn't out but as she got older and started eating baby food she seems to stick it out even more than before. She actually had her tongue stuck out in the ultrasound pictures. Its not hanging out but she sticks out and curls it up and I have always thought it was so cute until I got to wondering if she was ok. I did a google search and it stated that babies that have tongues that stick out could have downs or some other syndroms. I will love my baby no matter what but it really concerns me. I hope she is ok though. So I take her to the doctor today for a ear infection and I tell the pediatrian what is concerning me. She told me that she had already though of downs and that she had another marker too which was epicanthic fold around the eyes too. I never noticed this. I see it now but it not bad just a little bit. I look back in her newborn pictures and I don't start seeing it until around 4 months. I asked her if I need to be concerned and she said not right now because she was doing well and had great muscle tone. She said she will usually send a baby for test around 9 to 12 months if she gets concerned. She hadn't mentioned to me any of this because she said she didn't want to worry me and it not be anything. She said the tongue was tricky because some babies just like to stick out their tongues. When I was pregnant I had major test done to check for downs at 12 weeks. They did blood test of me and ultrasounds to test for downs and they came back negative. This is a test that is new that just came out in 2012. They told me it was 99 percent accurate. I told the dr this and she said we would just keep an eye on it. She said she had already looked for other markers on my daughter and didn't see anything else. I called the genetic councelor I saw when I was pregnant and she told me that since the test was 99 % accurate and plus she was in the nicu for 2 weeks that she thought that a doctor would have noticed. She said just because a baby is caucasion and has epicanthic folds does not mean that she has downs and that its just something that they see in down babies too. I am so worried and stressed and cried all day today. I know she doesn't have a heart defect that comes with ds because her heart was checked in hospital when she was born 6 weeks early. She doesn't look like she has downs but the dr said their r some cases where they don't look it. Have any of you had a baby that had epicanthic fold and was ok? Like I said I will love her no matter what I just would hate it if she had it. But it would never change how I feel for her. I just want my mind to be at ease. I also had early intervention since she was born early and they came out to make sure she was not delayed. She wasn't delayed so they never came back. They didn't mention anything about downs either.

I'm sorry I have no advice, just big hugs and I hope you get answers very soon. I can understand how stressful this would be as you imagine a life for your child and when it becomes unknown that can be very scary.

Hi ,
My 10 year old girl has downs ,
I think if it were me I would push to find out . Its just a wee blood test .
Mainly because IF she does have it , then there are a lot of other things that she would need looked at .
Downs baby can be perfectly healthy , but they also need their thyroids checked , celiac test , heart screen . Lots or nothing . It just depends on your bubba .
Did you feel comfortable sending me a private message of a photo?
Maybe I could see something in her like my daughter , or tell you I don't see it ?
Anyway im sure she is ok , but I would say find out for sure :)
