Can anyone give me advice? I am 39, turning 40 in July. DH and I have been trying since June. We got pg straight away and lost the baby end of August. We have been trying again for 3 cycles with no luck. Today I discovered that I am now well and truly in the obese category. Due to some circumstances beyond my control and some circumstances I could have controlled (like what I put in my mouth!) I have gained 30kg in the last 3 years. I am annoyed and ashamed. Now I notice a lot of physical consequences due to the weight and I am experiencing some health difficulties. DH and I have been considering stopping officially trying for the next 6 months so I can work on getting my weight back down to a healthy range. I think I need to put my health first as I will be no good to baby if I am struggling and unable to do the things a healthy Mum would do. The conundrum is that I am nearly 40. If I wait for 6 months, I will be 40 before we start trying again, and that seems risky in so many ways. I would have also missed out on 6 opportunities to get pg. What do you ladies think?

i dont think trying to lose weight and ttc are mutually exclusive, if once you get pregnant you stop trying to lose weight and instead try to eat healthy.

I think you should just keep trying because you're nearly 40 but really try and lose weight while you are trying.

Then when you're pregnant keep eating healthy and doing light exercise.

TTC 6 years
IVF it is
IVF/ICSI round one
10 eggs, 8 mature, 3 fertilised BFN
IVF/ICSI #2 = 22 eggs!
20 mature, 15 fertilised, 1 fresh transfer and 2 frosties
BFN
2 Frosties still in freezer thank god

Thanks ladies. I know weight loss and TTC are not separate, I just didn't think it would be wise to be pg and that overweight. But, yes, I am nearly 40 and I'll just keep eating healthy and exercising, same as what I would do if I was pg.

Yea, with the timing of it, I'd just do both at the same time. Its true, it's not ideal to be obese and pregnant, but nothing in life is ever ideal, and it would be a pity to miss out by trying to do things the 'right' way. (Also - "and some circumstances I could have controlled (like what I put in my mouth!)" - actual lol I can relate!)

Thanks Hopes - that's me to a T - always trying to do everything perfectly right. Well, here's hoping I can shake some weight before getting pg - I know losing 10% of your body weight increases infertility so maybe that'll be the key to conceiving for me!

Hi Tan I'm in the same boat as you. I turned 40 in November and we are ttc number 2. I am about 1.5 kg off my pre pregnancy weight but 4kg off the weight I probably should be. I'm at the high end of my BMI.....actually I think I am just over it at the moment which classes me as obese! I am trying to lose weight, its reeeeeally hard though,   especially with a 10 month old. My motivation is lacking and finding the time is not as easy as it used to be. But I understand how you feel - each month is precious so you don't want to not try. I agree with the others, just keep trying every month but make a constant effort to get your weight down as well. Exercising helps with fertility - eating the right foods does too. Don't put too much pressure on yourself though, there are plenty of women in this world falling pg in their 40's! It just takes a bit longer, that's all

Hi Tan
I have been TTC whilst also trying to loose weight. WHen I went to FA they told me I needed to lose 10-15 kg's and I have managed to lose 8 kg's with some exercise and dietary changes. Hard over Christmas I know but am trying to hang in there. I am still in the obese category but I think as long as you are exercising and eating right you should carry on trying
Best of luck :) xxx
