Hello,

I want to start to try to get pregnant this year and wonder if I should just stop taking the pill and take folic acid, or should I see a doctor before?

I am 35 years old, healthy (was just checked for the visa last year!), I had my last cervix swab last year, have been to the dentist last year… Rubella was checked when I was 13.

I have lived in two countries with very different health systems, so now I don’t know what is “normal” any more.

In Germany women who take the pill go to the gynaecologist every six months and are checked inside and out before they get their new prescription. In the Netherlands I was at the GP once, she asked me if I am healthy, and I could pick up my pill for years at the pharmacy without seeing her again.

Would you in New Zealand seek medical advice before stopping with the pill? If so, where would you go, a GP or a gynaecologist, or a midwife? We have some kind of insurance at Southern Cross.

I have had chlamydia, which increases the chance of tubular pregnancy and infertility, but really the only thing you can do is try and see. Oh yes, and I want to fly to Europe in December, so I’ll try not to conceive in a period that leads to me being pregnant in the first or last trimester in December.

Curious about your input

You dont really need to see your doctor beforehand but always a good idea to have a quick health check and get them to do bloods and you can get a prescription for folic acid and iodine

Good Luck

I just came off the pill in the inactive tablets and we tried straight away, I didn't see my GP until I thought I was pg. So normally I would suggest that wouldn't need to see a GP. However as you mention that you had chlamydia, if it was me then I would see a GP or gynae first just to talk through the possible outcomes of trying and becoming pg.
All the best for your TTC journey

I would go to GP first and get some prenatal bloods done which check iron and lots of other stuff, you can get a prescription for some folic acid while you are there. Then you can talk to the GP about any concerns you have about past history. Good luck!
