Well after having a good think, I have decided I want to use cloth nappies for Caden. He seems to be getting horrible nappy rash all the time now and I think it may be to do with disposables.
Also, when the new baby gets here, I dont really want to be buying double the amount of sposies, we just cant afford it. The new baby will be in spoises until it can fit cloth.
I have 6 MCN's that Jess made for me a while back, and I have put him in one of them this afternoon as they are lovely and soft inside and I also have a liner in there.

Only thing I dont really like is that its SO bulky cos of the cloth nappy I have as an insert.

I really want to order some itti bittis as Ive heard they are really good, the are not cheap but if the are worth it then we will go for it!

Ok so

Did you find that cloth nappies helped stop nappy rash?

What do you think are the best types? There are so many!

How many do you think we would need to buy?

TIA!

Edited for crappy grammer and spelling!

We have never had an issue with nappy rash but we have been in cloth 99% of the time.

I like pocket nappies just because you can adjust the aborbency to suit bubs and they dry super quick. As Daniel has got bigger they get less bulky as he grows. There's almost no difference on his bum between a pocket nap and a sposie now.

Ohh thought I would add, Daniel this summer is wearing most of his shorts from last year (3-6mnth and 6-9mnth sizes) with his cloth bum so they can't be that bulky haha

How many do you think we would need to buy?
Depends how often you want to wash. I have an insane amount but if you wanted to wash every 2nd day for example then 18 is a good number 2 days worth in the wash and then a full days worth dry while the rest is being washed.

Definitely. Samantha was in sposies until she was around 10 weeks and we had major problems with nappy rash during that time. Once we changed to cloth we have only had one rash since and that was with a tummy bug! We use cloth wipes as well though as all the bought ones give her a rash as well.

We are a pocket household. I have a few of everything (nappy addiction and all that) and although I like Sam's Itti Bitti's, we still have Pockets for our main nappies. Like Stacey said, they can be bulky, but as Sam gets older hers are more trim as well.
Plus with Pockets you can suit your absorbancy needs ie night time etc. We have tried the Itti Bitti's overnight with no sucess.
As for the bulkiness. It doesn't really make a difference anyway. I was paranoid that Sam wouldn't crawl or walk hers looked so big some days, but she did all those things early, so it doesn't have an effect.

How many do you think we would need to buy?
For Fulltime I would say between 18-24. I have heaps (around 35) and only have to wash once every 3-4 days (basically when the bucket is full) which makes it quite easy and cost effective for us.
It is expensive initially to set up in cloth, but once you have them they will do both Caden and any further children so you are saving yourselves thousands of dollars in the long run.

Thanks guys!

Im trying to decide between snazzipants and itti bitti's, might buy one of each and see what we like best.

Its good to know that cloth nappies dont cause horrible nappy rash like poor caden has been getting.

DS used to get rash when we used sposies, I always had to use the 'ultra sensitive' wipes. When we switched to cloth he hardly ever got a rash.

What do you think are the best types? There are so many!
There are heaps of types - you will have to decide what suits you and your baby best. Pockets have the advantage of you being able to adjust the absorbency and are quick drying. AIO require no stuffing so are easy to use although take a little longer to dry. AI2 (Ittis) are trim and dry fairy quickly as you can un-snap the inserts/boosters for drying.

How many do you think we would need to buy?
The best way is to work out how often you change your baby (as this is the amount you will need) and how often you want to wash. Buy a few extra to cover the times when you need to change unexpectantly and also while some are washing/drying.

Good Luck

Instead of purchasing why not visit a cloth mumma who has a variety in AK and have a good look through some different types and borrow a couple. Cheaper than buying and trying lol

We haven't had butt rash since........well can't actually remember.

We use sposies at night and cloth during the day, we have a mix of homemade covers that I lay inserts in, and itti bittis. I don't like pockets but thats just me, heaps of people love them. My inserts are a mix, 1 microfibre insert and one bamboo insert inside the covers. (the microfibre has been covered with micrefleece)

I have about 10 for each child but I wash kids stuff everynight when they have gone to bed (I wash naps and clothes together cos i'm lazy!)

I think Im liking the idea of the AIO type....but he wont be able to wear those to bed, so will need to pocket ones aswell for at night time.

He is quite a heavy wetter!

Did you find that cloth nappies helped stop nappy rash? OMG yes. i put Josh into sposies because he had a bug and was pooing every nappy in at least an hour. I was really careful and cleaned everytime but he got a wicked rash (ask Kebakat she saw it). My dr was totally amazed with the rash and put it down to the sposies and the bug combined. Once we got a handle on the bug and went back to cloth the rash slowly cleared. It took a while because of how bad it was.

What do you think are the best types? There are so many! I have pockets and I love them

How many do you think we would need to buy? Personally for you I think you would be best to go with one size ones. That way both Caden and the new baby can wear them and you don't have to worry about getting them mixed up and trying to put a small on Caden in your newborn hazzy days.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

After just an afternoon in cloth his rash is WAY less red! So Im am definitly doing the cloth! Going to use dads credit card and order a few!

i dont know where you are in auckland but i would recommend a trip to the snazzipants shop. they have every type of nappy you can imagine - as well as their own great brand (which are fitteds) and the staff there are really helpful and willing to answer all your questions.
i dont think they do itti bittis but they do have other types of all in ones...
if you cant get to their shop then their website has heaps of info incl a comparison chart, and little movies of nappies being put on...

i def agree that they are better for rashy botts!

Having 2 kids so close you could definitely get your money's worth out of cloth nappies! We switched when our second baby was 5mths old and I really wished we'd tried sooner. Even though we thought he'd be our last at the time we have saved so much on disposables and I love not throwing yucky nappies out with our rubbish every week!

We went straight into a medium at 5mths and went with Fuzzi Bunz & Honeychild, both of which I liked. I prefer Honeychild over Fuzzis because I think they're better made and the quality of the fabrics are nicer, but they are quite pricey. They sell well on Trade Me though so you could always buy a few off there - around $15-$20 for a used nappy with insert in good condition would be reasonable. Pockets dry really quickly and you have the advantage of being able to stuff them with more overnight.

However, when Leo moved into larges we discovered Itti Bitti D'lish AIO's and they would now be my favourite. They're really trim and are SO easy to use as everything is sewn in so it just goes straight into the wash and then off the line straight back on again. It's very Dad-friendly!! It's takes a bit longer to dry than a pocket but because it's made of bamboo it's more absorbent than most pocket inserts (microfibre) without being bulky. They stay looking really nice after washing and seem to hold their resale value well too. You can buy them in bulk on lay-buy and get one free with every dozen. They are small-fitting but Leo (now toilet trained during the day) is 28mths & 15kg and still fits the large, which he wears as a night nappy with a bamboo mini-booster.

As for how many you'll need, I never had more than 12-15 nappies for full time use, but I put a wash on every day (I prefer to rather than have them sitting around longer, it just became part of my daily routine). So if you had 2 in nappies you'd need to double that, allowing a few more for a newborn and their frequent poos!!

If you wanted to have both kids in the same nappy then I'd recommend a BumGenius v3 (altho prices are due to rise considerably!!) or a Swaddlebees Econappi, both of which are a one-size pocket nappy. They'll cost a bit more but you have the convenience of only having the one size to use on both kids.

I'd also highly recommend buying cloth wipes. They might seem like a faff at first but they're so much nicer & more effective than disposable wipes! I just keep mine dry & folded in half in a Huggies container and then run one under a warm tap before each nappy change (a warm wet cloth must surely be so much nicer than a cold one!). I bought 15 wipes and only used one per nappy change (even for nasty poos!) and never ran out. My favourites are the terry/velour and flannel/sherpa Dandelionz ones sold by Greenbeans. They're still in such good condition and have never stained, after so much use! And because they're all natural (no need for soaps or cleaners, I've only ever used warm water) it really helps keep nappy rash away and is more gentle if they do have a sore bottom.

I hope that helps!

Just on the snazzipants AIO- I am not sure if Caden is a cubbly bubba, but Ella has quite *healthy* thighs and is big for her age and she grew out of the snazzipants AIO large very fast (i.e. before she turned 1). I also have the bitti's and have found the fit to be much better and she is in a large with still room to grow.

Why not just buy trimmer inserts for pockets?

Hemp and bamboo are trimmer for the absorbancy and work really really well when combined with microfibre.

I personally use a microfibre insert and cotton flat in a pocket for mr 15 months, and have no trouble finding pants that fit.

Not everyone finds that ittis work for them, despite what you might think by reading these boards, so maybe just try one and see what you think. I personally find that the snap in ittis are dreadful for washing poo out of, and the sewn in ittis have dreadful wingdroop.

having 2 kids in sposies would be a nightmare sheena!   we switched to cloth when charli was about 8wks old and never looked back. she did get the odd rash but nothing a liner and some cream didn't fix

personally, i love pockets (baby harmony and drybees are my faves) but i love the itti bitti snap in one also. you can change the absorbancy and they aren't bulky at all

i'd recommend getting 2 nappies of a few different brands to try and see what you like best. nappies are easy to re-sell if you don't like them.

i'd also recommend getting cloth wipes too, so much nicer on the wee bums than disposable ones

take note of how many times you change caden and then add a couple more on top......then double it if you only want to wash every 2nd day, which is what i did cos i'm lazy

Thanks everyone

Im in south Auckland, where abouts is the snazzipants shop?

mum2ella-Caden isnt too chubby, he is quite slim, so he doesnt have chubby theighs yet.
I am thinking the pocket ones will be better cos he is a heavy wetter, I will try the bamboo and hemp inserts.

I think I will wash every 2 days aswell, I will just rinse them and chuck them in a nappy bucket and do a hot wash of nappies.

Im still undecided on what brand though lol!

Sheena the snazzipants store is in Milford. Definitely worth the trip though, it is cloth nappy heaven

The bonus about having a wee little man is the nappies fit for longer :) I have a funny feeling that my little lady is never going to get the chance to grow out of her mediums

Just to let you know you don't need to rinse your nappies by hand before washing them, you can just stick them straight into the bucket and leave the lid on until you're ready to wash - then just do a rinse cycle on the machine first before adding powder for the wash (cold or warm wash is fine, no need for hot!). Of course if you have a really poo-ey nappy then you can tip or rinse the excess off first (you don't want a solid poo sitting in your nappy bucket!) but there's no need to rinse a wet nappy
