    Posted: 19 February 2012 at 7:20pm
I'm proposing to my partner on the 29th and I wanted to know if any other ladies on here proposed to theirs instead of the other way around. I don't really know how or where or when to do it! I've bought him a watch and am getting it engraved with "will you marry me?".

And men, (if any happen to read this), what do you think about this, if someone were to propose to you, how would you like it done?

How awesome! I can't give you advice from a guys point of view, but just from a general POV....
Don't do it in public...it's such a special moment between the two of you, it can be a little awkward having others around for such a private moment.
And you know...in private can lead to much fun

To be honest I was thinking about going out for dinner and doing it then, after we'd eaten... just passing it over the table and then telling him to look closer and turn it over! But i just have no idea... maybe going for dinner then after going for a walk and doing it then :) Or picnic at the beach!

Both great ideas.
Anyway what is most important isn't the way you do it, but the fact you are!
All the best!

to be honest, I proposed to my boyfriend and he spent the next hour laughing hysterically at me. and never took it seriously.
later when he did talk to me he said he felt stink because I took the thrill out of proposing and felt it emasculated him.

he is yet to propose to me formally as he is waiting for the right time

yep he laughed.
i felt really stink about it.

my best friend had died in a sudden accident (its a year ago today), we were in chch and the earthquake meant my world had literally fallen down around me from what I knew and i thought bugger it I know what I want and what I want is you. so i proposed and he thought it was funny.
I mean admittedly it wasn't in the best place seeing as we were on a plane but still I did it all legit and yet he still laughed.

Aw that is pretty stink... I know mine wont laugh but he might feel like it's something he's meant to do and not me and feel weird about it. He's the kind of guy that wont talk to me about his day or tell me if he's having a hard time with work because it makes him feel like less of a man. But I'm not the kind of person to wait around for something, when I want something I go out and get it haha. Plus, he can always propose to me as well, once he's bought me a ring ;)

I've decided to have a romantic picnic dinner and do it then, but not actually ask him just give him the watch and a letter saying how much I love him then get him to read what's engraved on the watch.
I'm not romantic and we have never really done anything romantic together so I feel a bit silly planning a romantic picnic but I think he'd like it :)

So in the weekend he told one of my friends when she asked him when he's going to propose to me that he doesn't really want to get married. Guess I'm gonna need all the luck I can get!!

Bummer, but maybe you just have to convince him otherwise?

I was thinking after reading all this, maybe instead of engraving the question will you marry me, perhaps put a statement on it. That way it is not an official proposal, he still gets the opportunity to do the 'man thing' later but it shows your intention that you want to be together forever. Maybe along with the gift of the watch, say I love you and I want to marry you. That leaves it open for him later, and takes away any chance of awkward silence if he needs time to process (especially if he is a man of few words - aren't most of them!!)

A few ideas just brainstormed for the watch:
True love is Forever
Me + you = always
Mr and Mrs ;-)

Okay those are a bit cheesy, but I'm sure the girls in here have a few great sayings!

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I'll tell him we aren't having any more kids until he buys me a ring haha. He wants four :s Or better yet, that we're not having sex for the next three months as that's how long the waiting list is for the birth control I'd go for. That could do it :p
I've already got it engraved, and if I'm not direct about it he'll skirt around it and it'll never happen, I think!
