I have desided I need to declutter our house and am after tips on where to start and how?!
We dont have a lot of storage space at all,...like DD's room doenst even have a wardrobe, and with #3 on the way, we really need some extra space!

What do u do about things that u may uses again one day in the very distant future, and havent used for years- to u hang on to them like we have or get rid,...Im talking diving gear, ski clothing etc.

And what about setimental stuff that cant be displayed but doesnt serve any perpose- we have boxes of stuff from our 2 yrs in London that we dont really wanna chuck, but have probably opened about twice in 8 years!

The kids have way way too many toys, many that they never touch- they are mostly sorted into those big warehouse containers, but what else can I do to reduce the toy clutter inside? We dont like many toys left in the lounge, and they have a toy room where the toys are stored joined to DD;s room- but they hardly ever play in there. What can I do to make them wanna ply in there instead of dragging it all out in the lounge?!

TIA!

We are in a small 3-bedroom place with not much storage, one thing we did was install the wardrobe organisers you can get as it adds loads of shelving etc and you can still hang clothes etc

I have become pretty ruthless over the years if we dont use something we bin it unless its something we just cant part with and then we store it in the garage or at MILs under her stairs - do you have a garage? could you add shelving in there?

Getting kids to play in room we have to take Belle into her room to play otherwise she wants to mess up lounge, which I dont mind too much as long as its cleaned before bedtime. But after doing this with her for a while she now choses to go and play in there and doesnt like to bring her toys out now!

We also use under the bed storage containers for clothes etc

For stuff like dive gear.. will you get into it again when the kids are older.. if so keep it but put it in the roof space (properly cleaned and stuff first though) then at least its out of sight and not taking up space. Same goes with the stuff from london. We have quite a bit of crap stored in our roof space like that or seasonal stuff.

Toys. I go through every now and then. Biff anything that is broken. Sort through into used lots and then I decide from the rest if its really needed. If not then I put it up on trademe as a bulk lot and get some cash for it. I keep one or two toys from each "stage" and keep in a small box just for when we have babies here.

As for the toy room, kids wanna play near people in the house, if you spend your time in the lounge thats where they will wanna play. If your in the play room they will play in there

One great idea for clothes I heard of once was to hang all your clothes with the hanger back to front and once you wear an item hang it back up the right way. Then after about 3-6 months anything that still has the hanger back to front goes!

Kellz you need to be ruthless !    Diving/ski gear I agree with Kebakat, store in the roof. Toys- take everything they don't play with and put it on TM or to second hand stores- pass alongto friends.

Can you invest into some underbed storage containers/vaccum bags? You can squish a heap of stuff in those.

As for getting them to play in the toy room. I found if eveything is set out nicely and has it's place they are more likely to play with it. Just takes a while to get them to tidy up after themselves lol.

Could have one container of toys in the lounge during the day and then they pack it up and return to toy room at the end of the day ? I just started doing that and it's working quite well. I also got some proper toy storage for their rooms for the toys they have left.

Whatbdo younalready have for Islas clothes ?

Pudgy- She has 2 sets of drawers but Ive condensed in into one set and put her out-of-season clothes in boxes on top of our wardrobe, so that the baby can have one set of her drawers. Her and Aiden will be sharing a room and will have a small single wardrobe to share and a chest of drawers each.

I hadnt thought of storing stuff in the roof. We have insulation up there- will the stuff go mouldy or anything?
We have a single garage which has firewood stacked along one side and basically a massive pile of junk taking up the rest of the room. OInce we have decluttered the house we will borrow a trailer and take the junk and the junk from the garage to the tip after weve sorted dtuff to sell and give away.

Might have to think about some sort of sheleving for the garage- thats a good idea- then we can store the toy boxes out there too and rotate into the house, meaning less stuff in the toy room at once.

Might get some underbed storage stuff too.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.

We have a small three bedroom house too. I'm totally ruthless with "clutter" and work on - if I have to think about it, I probably don't need it.

I also think carefully before buying/bringing things home. I ask: Will this have a space, do I have something else that will do the same job, is it a need or a want? Often I will leave and if I still think I need it or have to have it then I will go back and get it a few days later. (But normally I have forgotten all about it!)

Some things can dis-colour in the roof cavity - plastics and white stuff particularly.

Good luck with de-cluttering - It makes people feel amazing when their space is de-cluttered!

eta: with the dive gear / ski gear you might like to ask yourself: When do you expect to use it again? Will it still be current / in fashion etc or will it be out of date? We sold our dive and water ski gear but do regret selling some of the dive equipment, but never think twice about the ski equipment.

The sking gear is just clothing, but will be expensive to replace and we wont worry about if its fashionaable cos if we do eventually go sking it wont be a regular thing, just a few day visit with the kids.

The dive gear is worth heaps and DH does wanna get back into it, but cant see it happening.

Have sorted the playroom and kids toys in their rooms today- they still have way too many tho I think. Chucked a heap of broken stuff and Mc'd's toys etc, and have a bag of very decent toys that we have double ups off- like we have 3 shape sorters- and will gift them to charity.

I was going to say, go through and biff macca's toys, we did that in our son's room this morning We didn't have many but still they bug me so out they went.

It's hard decluttering with kids around cause they're still very attached to their bits of rubbish. See if you can get someone to take them out for a couple of hours and you & DH get stuck in & do it. It only took us 1/2 hour to completely clean and declutter DS's room this morning. I was surprised at how short the time period was.

Next plan of attack is DD's room....eekkkkk

It has taken us all day- DS was in his pj's all day, lol,...but was having a ball washing the side of the garage then making mud puddles and riding his bike through them, lol! We were sorting the garage- have a heap of junk to throw away now- sorted all their toys inside and out- chucked all the cracked or broken sandpit and outdoor stuff too, and now have a container to store in in. Have now got more than half of their toys in the garage, and will rotate them into the house every few weeks.
DS's room is looking great- havent tackled his wardrobe- but Ive sorted it heaps, I just need to actually give back and give away the stuff in there that we dont need then there will be a bit of space- the more we do the more I can see that we can do too- like stuff in the top kitchen cupborads that is never touch. We now have a plan to move the kids into the same room during the easter holidays- so that if its terrible and Isla keeps getting woken up, then at least she hasnt got school!

we store everything in the roof, we have put bench cut offs dh gets from work up there which are really strong so hold the weight and dh and myself can both get up there when stuff is needed. but our rule is only things we cant part with goes up there and it has to be clean and sorted 1st or stuff that is only used every now and then, like out suitcases and xmas stuff.
ours is also full insulated and it hasnt bothered anything.

I will go against the grain and say that storing a lot of stuff in your roof cavity is not a good idea. My best friends house across the road from us burnt down when we were kids, they had their ceiling space filled with all sorts of stuff and it was what fueled the fire, helped it spread quickly and made putting it out very difficult. The firemen gave everyone within ear shot a warning about not doing it. At present we have our suitcases up there but that is all.

Good point clover. I think we will actually be sweet with the space in our garage- have sorted sooo much junk to chuck today,..that once we have finished sorting through every room and all the wardrobes and sort out what we have left, pretty sure it will fit on shelving in the garage,...we might even have room to park the car in there, lol!

Haha, I know what you mean. We sorted our garage out a while ago to be able to park in there and it was a mission!

Another idea for storage is your garage roof space, much less likely to burn down. We store heaps up above the rafters, just down some old plywood and instant shelving.

Ditto to keeping the dive stuff, too expensive to replace.

I am a declutter queen, do it really regularly and really enjoy it. Still have lots of crap but it does bother me. I usually start with 3 boxes if i'm on a big clear out. 1 for throwing out (broken/stained), 1 for selling (good quality/worth the effort) and 1 for donate.
Nowadays tbh i can't be arsed with trademe unless i'm going to get over $10 per item i just don't bother.
Then i just got through i decide straightaway and chuck it in the box. I go room by room and then regularly go through storage too, amazing how much crap is in there!

I love to declutter also as too much stuff around the place drives me insane, maybe because I am the one that picks it all up & finds places for it.

At the moment I am doing clothes. With having all boys DS3 has all he clothes handed down to him & has a few bits new. I need to work out how much of 1 item they need & then either put the rest away for DS2/3 or get rid of it. We now have a dryer after not having one for 2yrs so I need extra kids clothes & now that all 3 are at school & have uniforms I don't need as much day clothes. Not sure how much to keep per child yet...

The other major is toys & as they are getting older there are lots that are not played with any more...I am trying to focus them on the stuff I know they will put the hours in with & not the stuff flashed before them on tv.

I also have boxes when sorting & I get ruthless when doing it alone
