    Posted: 07 February 2012 at 10:12am
I really need some support here, Im going through hell. We've been trying to start a family for two and a half years. I've had two miscarriages and a laparoscopy. Finally I got a positive test a couple of weeks ago but when I had a transvaginal scan at six weeks and three days there was no heartbeat. Doctor said he was 'concerned' and we should come back in a week to check again. That was three days ago and now i am a nervous wreck. I dont think I can handle another miscarriage but this not knowing seems even worse than that. As well as worrying about a miscarriage, I worry that if the baby is ok, all this stress is doing it harm. Has anyone had an experience like this? Anyone know about early scans and when you can usually see the heart beating? Any words of support to help me through the next few days would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Hugs to you Hebe

I didn't want to read and run.

My understanding is that it is not unusual to not see a heartbeat until 7 weeks, so there is hope.

If (and I truly hope it is not!) you have another miscarriage you should be referred to the high risk pregnancy clinic. (Someone else please correct me if I am wrong). There are quite a few new mums and mums to be on Oh Baby who have also had multiple miscarriages and gone on to have successful pregnancies.

Wishing you all the best.

I thought that it was a bit early as well before 7 weeks to be able to see heart beat. Fingers crossed this is the case for you, must be very stressful!

I had a scan at 5 wks 4 days and there was no heartbeat but I was told not to be concerned because it doesn't normally show until 6-7 weeks. I went back at 12 weeks and everything was perfect! It sounds like you are probably a bit too early still so try not to worry, I know it's hard not to.

I had a scan at what I thought was 6 weeks and no heartbeat seen but the sonographer (who was a mate) said come back in a week and half and low and behold there bang on was a normal little heart beat.

I thought I knew my dates exactly as I had charted but I was probably out by 4 days and that can make the difference to whether its seen or not.

Don't give up hope as there are many reasons on a technical basis why it may not be seen yet such as the resolution of the machine isn't high enough or bubs is in a position which makes it harder.

I really hope this is the case and you have a great scan next time seeing that little heart beat away

Actually I agree with the comment that the scanning equipment might not be up to scratch. When I told my MW where I went for the early scan she said the equipment is old making the images less clearer than you would get at other places and she would never recommend going there. Apparently there can be big differences depending where you go.

Big hugs to you Hebe i can just imagie how stressful this is for you.

Try not to give up just yet, with DD we went for a scan at what we thought was 6 weeks and there was no heartbeat, told to go back a week later and there it was!! It seems that I wasn't quite as far along as I thought, and when baby was measured on the scan that was confirmed, so first scan was way too early to see the heartbeat.

Best of luck, I hope this is the case for you

Thank you so much, all of you, for taking the time to reassure me. I feel a little better. I was glad to hear all the various reasons why a heartbeat might NOT be heard, I hope it is one of those reasons.

I had a scan at 6 weeks and was the same, no heartbeat. A week and a half later I had another scan and saw her HB and all was well. Very stressful time, big hugs!

Hi Hebe

I can understand that you are a nervous wreck. Having had a miscarriage 3 years ago I remember very clearly the "waiting 3 days for another scan" was agony.

Im with everyone else I had heard that 6 weeks was too early to see the heartbeat too. Fingers crossed for you.

Make sure that you do whatever makes you happy for the next few days and try not to be too hard on yourself. Chocolate and girl mags might help.

As stoked said if it is heartbreaking news again get a referral as soon as you feel up to seeing a specialist.

How did you get on Hebe??

I am currently waiting in limboland and its hard!

I had a scan last Wednesday after finding out we are pregnant with a surprise baby only to get there and be told i'm measuring about 6 weeks and there is no heartbeat!
10 days seems so long to wait and i bet this week is going to go so slowly. We are having another scan on Friday morning and hoping like mad to see a beautiful heartbeat!

Hi J&Ls Mum. I would not wish this situation on anyone, it is horrible not knowing; hoping and fearing at the same time. Im holding your hand and hoping for the best for you.

Im sorry I cant tell you an encouraging story now. When I went back for another scan at 7 weeks and two days there was still no heartbeat and had been little growth. I had read heaps on the internet about people who didn't see the heartbeat until 9 weeks or 12 weeks so I asked the doctor at Fertility Associates Wellington who did the trans-vaginal scan) if you should definitely be able to see the heart by now and he said yes. We decided to wait for a miscarriage to happen naturally (rather than taking drugs or going hospital)and it started a few days later.

TTC since June 2009
Laparoscopy Aug 2011
Due 29 April 2010, departed at 7 weeks.
Due 17 Nov 2011, departed at 6 weeks.
Due 26 Sept 2012, departed at 7 weeks.
