another question from an overthinker

hey how much stock do you guys put into 'if babies lips are blue around the outside they have wind'? I may be overthinking () again but Alex has always been rather blue around and I have often wondered if it's because he has a secret pocket of wind somewhere of just if he is naturally blue.

I always went by that, was definitely true for my boy. I had no idea how or why to wind a baby lol so mum taught me that wee thing and it definitely helped. (Even though winding took like 1/2 an hour sometimes lol)

ok so more questions now    I know that each baby will be different but how much wind should they have. You can get a good burp or 3 out of Alex after a feed, not every feed mind you, but then he will give you more throughout his wake period.

Just to be a killjoy - have you mentioned the blue lips to your plunket nurse? I know they are rumoured to be a sign of wind (I still remember being told to get out of bed and walk Daniel till it went away, at 2am following the birth from hell ) and many babies just have them for whatever reason, but it can also be a sign of issues with the heart. When I was talking to my LC about it, she said she couldn't understand, physiologically, why they would be blue if windy.

I burp him halfway through each side, and at the end of each side. Probably get a burp 70% of the time. But Daniel is a really spilly baby, so often throws up instead of burping

yeah I asked plunket nurse last week. She said it isn't just an old wives tale and do I notice the colour go down when he burps but to be honest I only ever think about it when he is in the bath cos thats when you can see just how blue they are. Maybe I should mention it to doc next time we go there and see what she says I may just be being a total overthinker (cos I know I am) but the colour never seems to be any less than it is and I am pretty sure there is no secret bubble of wind somewhere cos Alex would let me know if there is (we used to have issues around the wind situation)

I've read that the blue thing is an old wives' tale, but so many people (including Plunket nurses and midwives) still seem to stand by it, so maybe there is some truth in it? It does seem weird that wind would cause the skin around their mouth to change colour though.

I have never paid much attention to the blue-ness of my boys lips. I can tell if they still have wind by the hardness of their tummies. If they are rock-hard, they have wind but if they are slightly soft and flexible they dont have any. This way always works for me.
