Topic: Big bed worries Posted: 29 June 2006 at 11:55am |
Last night was Ella's first night in her big bed. She was so excited and was desperate to got to bed all evening! She went off to sleep fine and only grizzled briefly after an hour or so, but settled herself.
When I went to bed I popped in and found her fast asleep on top of the duvet facing the end of the bed. When Hubby came up a little later he found her fast asleep on the mattress we'd put next to the bed in case of crashes. He was really worried about her, that she might get cold, get tangled in the sheets falling out, get stuck under the duvet or pillow and smother and that we might not hear if she needed us. (although her room opens right off ours) He decided to sleep in with her to make sure she was alright. I'd had similar worries being the fretful person that I am, but figured that I just had to get over it, make her as safe as I could and let her get used to sleeping in there.
So, to my question. How did you all make the transition?
Did you worry about any of these things, and how did you address them?
Thanks for your help!

I worried about all of these things with Sean, including the concern about him strolling down the hallway in the middle of the night to get into mischief when I was asleep. In the end sleep deprivation took over (for me) and I went to sleep and everything was fine. Sleeping on top of the bed and on the crash-mattress is probably all part of the new adventure - she'll soon get the idea that her own bed is the comfiest place to sleep - especially if you give her mountains of praise when she is in her bed. I'd try and avoid sleeping in there with her - it's a really tough dependence to break if she decides she likes having you or dad in there.

I still use a baby monitor between the rooms just to make sure I can appear quickly if she gets upset (which she doesn't!)
The baby monitor is only because I could sleep through a 9.5 scale earthquake and only wake up with the volume on the monitor right up! (Legacy of sharing a room with my noisy child for 13 months!)
Just might take a bit of time for you both to adjust! She'll be fine though. My little brother fell out of the top bunk at the foot end and my sister found him asleep in the morning, stuck between the end of the bunks and the wardrobe. He survived to tell the tale! hehe

Crap, I did have a point! Maybe using a monitor right next to the bed will give hubby a bit of peace of mind that he can respond to any bumps/thumps/screams.

Thanks for your help guys! The last 2 nights have been heaps better as I dug up her old safe-t-sleep and put it on the bed so she can't wriggle down or fall out. She doesn't like it much but only woke once briefly last night to object.
