My husband and I are trying to decide wether to go camping in the New Year, it would be for about 4/5 nights. I will be 31 weeks by then, 32 weeks by the time we would be due to come home.

We live in Christchurch and are looking at camping at Lake Benmore which is about a 10-15 minute drive from Twizel. It would be about a 3-4 hr drive from Christchurch.

We only have a queen air bed which goes straight on the ground, we would take our 4 burner bbq which has a gas hob on one side. The toilets are a bit of a walk from where we would set up camp site. I would not be doing anything other then sitting around the campsite relaxing. My main concerns are eating correctly and not getting food poisoning, however we have friends who live in Twizel who could keep our food refridgerated/frozen. And the other concern is being so far away from home and my MW.

What are everyones thoughts on this topic, I would love to hear feed back to help our decision.

Thanks

I went camping at about 18 weeks and it wasn't a problem, I didn't mind having to run to the bathroom to throw up or do the middle of the night loo stops, food was not a problem at all and it was great having a beach there to cool off at.

HOWEVER DH organised for us to go camping when I was around 32 weeks and despite having thought I could do it earlier on, I pulled out. I was really tired by then, and getting up off the air bed by myself would have been impossible - the clincher for DH was when I said to him "ok I'll go, but you'll have to get up 4 times a night to pull me up off the air bed so I can go to the loo".

(ETA - friends of ours have a fancy air bed which sits up on a frame off the ground like a "real" bed, so if you can get/borrow one of those then it could be more practical! My other reasoning was that I was so unwieldy by then I wasn't really be able to help put up the tent, and DH can't do it by himself)

I went camping at 38 weeks, but it was not planned my stupid partner got drunk and so couldn't drive home at night like we were suppose to. We were in Kaikoura and we are from Chch too. Apart from the most uncomfortable sleep it wasn't so bad.

If you haven't had any complications I'd say go for it.

Oh snap Kiruan, we usually go to Aivemore just down the road and ill be about the same stage preg so i was wondering about this too. We live in cromwell so will be about 2 hours from home mw dr etc. what sort of food is good to take? Should we just try to buy things every few days rather that taking a weeks worth?

We camped a couple of weeks ago and last week we spent a few nights crashed on the airbed at a friends place and I haven't had any drama. I actually found the airbed really comfortable and mastered getting up and down pretty quickly, although one time I did nearly send DH flying off the other side coz I came down onto the bed a tad too heavily.

I would go for sure. I really love camping and find it's a nice way to relax. I wanted to go this Christmas but we already have plans.

Kriaun, I just posted in the March thread on this, but just remembered that those beds that Weegee mentioned above, you can get at the Warehouse for cheap, might be worth a look.

My only concern would be whether you would get a sore back from sleeping in a tent for a few nights, as your ligaments will be softened at that point in pregnancy. Best thing would be to try out the airbed one night/afternoon at home.

I did it. I was 32 weeks pregnant, on my own (my parents werrn't far away though) and had a 2 year old to chase around for 5 nights in the middle of nowhere. It was lovely, even went for a float down the river in a tyre tube :P
Sleeping on the air bed was fine (even though I had it to myself) its not like you can sleep anywhere too comfortable at that stage. I got pretty used to running through the bush at night to the toilet.
I could fully stand in my tent so that made it easier with getting dressed. (I had major sciatic nerve pains so getting dress was still difficult)

I honestly had never thought about food, I guess If I cooked it I made sure it was well cooked, tried to avoid too much food that had to be chilled (cheese, yogurt etc)

I would say go for it! Its probably the last chance you are going to get to have a relaxing holiday on your own!
