A question... Sophia is sleepin A LOT. Slept for 14 hours last night, one hour awake then two hours down, an hour awake and 2 1/2 hrs and counting.....She is still asleep and I have tried waking her gently...she will stir and stretch then settle down to sleep again.   She has done this every day for the last week. Should I not look a gift horse in the mouth? Can a baby have too much sleep? An I stressing over nothing? Opinions and views welcome

Wow! Could be a growth spurt, some babies sleep more when they're going through a bit of a spurt (and she's close to 3 months when they're supposed to get one). When she is awake, is she alert and happy? And is she well hydrated, and giving you plenty of wet nappies? If the answer to those is yes, then there's most likely nothing to worry about, and you should enjoy it while it lasts! But if she's dozy all the time, grumpy or dehydrated, then you should probably get her checked out...

Thanks..I thought a growth spurt also but they don't last for over a week do they? My Plunket nurse told me that second time mums do not get as much time as new born mums do so I am reluctant to even phone them   She is happy most of the time but others she is asleep by the time I burp her. She has lots of wet nappies bu they are rather smelly and yellow. After her three hour sleep this pm she has been happy to be up for and hour and a half...talking and playing....maybe I am over thinking it.

When JJ's had a growth spurt they've lasted up to a week and a half. Unfortunately I got less sleep during his spurts, not more!

Sounds like she's perfectly happy, but don't be afraid to ring Healthline or Plunket - they're there for everybody.

I was concerned recently that JJ was dehydrated or had an infection cos we had stinky yellow nappies - but after getting him checked out I realised I'm using cloth and I think it was just a slight buildup on the nappies themselves, a hot wash fixed it!

Jeana, if you're worried, call Healthline and go through to one of the Well Child nurses. I have found them really good - they ask lots of good questions and then make recommendations.

Jackson is quite similar though. Often he only wants to be awake an hour at a time, and I then usually have to wake him or he'd sleep lots. And, often when he is looking like he wants to sleep, I amp the playing up or put him on his play gym and he gets a second wind. Often that means he will stay up for an hour and a half. Two hours is our absolute limit.

Sophie is a sleepy one too - she was not too good at handling more that 70 mins awake at that age.

to your plunket nurse - how rude. I have spoken to plunket line a LOT more since Sophie was born. In fact I never called them until AFTER Sophie was born .

I agree with jaycee - that's absolutely disgusting that the Plunket nurse told you that!! Have to say that I'm quite disillusioned with the whole service...

It's just that Plunket don't get as much funding for second time mums, so you don't get as many plunket visits. It's not that they think you don't deserve as much time, just a funding thing....

If you are worried I would do as the others suggest & ring healthline & speak to a wellchild nurse.

It means that we second time mums do not get as many visits due to funding....but Rose did say that if I have any worries to phone the parents centre. i guess I have been there before and more time should be spent on first time mums but it does not make thing any easier.
I am just accepting the fact that she is going through a huge change ie sleeping through the night and her feeds and sleeping routine have all changed. She was a bit better today so I will plod along and if things get worse I will phone the parents centre or health line.
Cheers guys, I realise some parents would be thinking I am crazy to worry about too much sleep when they can barley get their children to sleep an hour at a time...but I think that it is the quiet onse you need to watch.

Mmmm.........when Leah was born I got 1 plunket visit before 14 weeks (second was supposed to be 12 week but that was over xmas so it was late). With Joel they came to the house at 5 weeks and 7 weeks, then had a clinic visit at 11 weeks and I popped in to weigh him at 14 weeks as well and she got his chart out and checked his growth etc even though I was just doing a self weigh. I am next seeing them at 5 months, so we certainly got more visits second time around.

Yeah...I do not know if things have changed but with Lachie I was allowed to pop in and weigh him if i wanted to when i wanted to (in West Auckland) Now when I suggestd going in a weighing her if i was worried she said no for the above reasons. Is there a difference between AKL and CHCH funding?
