Hi,

How do you know when to move up to the next teat size?

We are curently using the first size but where he used to need to take a break as it was too fast he seems to be taking a lot longer, just wondered what other peoples experience is here.

Wehn I was using Avent Bottles, I thought that the Number 1 teat was too slow for Caden, so tried the Number 2 teats and he was better on those. Then when he got older we went to number 3 but it was too fast so went back to number 2 for a few weeks then went back to number 3 lol.

You might find the number 2 is too fast for him at his age, but you could try.
He was probably just getting used the fast flow of a bottle, going from breast to bottle is very different for them. So now he might just be used to the bottle and is happy feeding without taking a break. If he isnt fussing at the bottle or anything Id just leave him be.
Caden started getting grumpy and crying during feeding when the teat size was wrong for him.

We've actually just moved to the number 3 teat for Amy's bottle fed with her dad

Not sure whether this was the reason or not, but Amy was starting to chatter away to DH when she was feeding and he thought she was getting frustrated with the number 2 teat ... so we switched to number 3 and she's calmed down again. Gets through her feed a lot faster too

Oh ok, sounds like they do give you a sign, he is still happily gulping away on size 1, so will leave it for now

I think they recommend size 2 from about 2 months, and size 3 from 6 months, but you need to work out what works for you. Also, if you combine bottle and BF, you probably want the bottle to have a slower flow, as otherwise bottle feeding can become easy (and therefore preferable) for the baby.

Number 2 is from 2 months but you just go with the baby. We knew with Jack when he started taking longer and also getting tired from drinking as it was such hard work (what a sook!). I think we went #2 at 6 weeks, #3 at 4 months, and #4 at 6 months and now he's on a sippy cup insert.
