Hi guys,

We know we want to have our kids quite close together. I was just wondering if anyone has anything to say on why they decided on when to have #2. Did you have friends with kids that were close together that got on well, or you wanted #1 to be at kindy before having #2 etc. We are undecided on when to start trying for another baby, and everyone seems to have an opinion on what age gap is good, so let me hear it from the women who really know!!

We started trying for number two when jacob was around 7 months old, but it was hard, as I was still breastfeeding, and hadm't had a period. He weaned about 10 months and i got my period straight away, and god pregnant on my second cycle. We wanted to have them close together for a number of reasons, the biggest being we would like them to be friends. I have friends with a similar gap,a nd they say that although it is hard at the start, it is all good. The downside, I guess, is that my "baby" will be a "big boy" when #2 arrives, and I worry i will "miss" him.

We decided we wanted out kids about 2 - 2.5 yrs apart (ok - I decided more than dh, but he went along with it).  My main reasoning was that most of my friends with more than one had that kind of age gap, and my sister and I did as well and we get on great.

However life had other plans, and we are still trying for number two 18 months later! lol.

Although it's upsetting that #2 isn't so easy to come by as #1 was, I am quite happy that the gap will be larger now.  Bethany is slow on toilet training, and I really want one out of nappies before another comes along - the cost would be difficult - although not impossible of course.  Also, with being that bit older, bethany will have more of an understanding of whats going on - that she will have to share Mum and Dad.  I still expect there to be issues, but she will have the ability to understnad better. Bethany will be at least 3.5, more likely older than that whenever (if ever?) #2 comes along.

I don't want too big a gap though - I am 30 and don't want to be having babies for too much longer.  I don't want to be an older Mum with teenagers in my late 50s.  But again - thats a personal choice.  Theres nothing wrong with being an older Mum, it's jsut not for me.  The way we are going, we will most definitely be stopping at 2 kiddos.  It's jsut taking too long.  I don't even imagine how long it would take to concieve a 3rd!  haha.

We have 4 years between #1 and #2, but that's because Kiya is my daughter from a previous relationship and she was 6 months old when Nathaniel (my hubby) and I met. We will have 18 months between #2 and #3, but that is because #3 happened a little sooner than expected!

Nat and I want 5 kids... our plan is to start talking about (and maybe actually start) TTC the next one when the youngest turns one. I want an age gap of about 20-24 months between kids, and Nat is happy with that.

there will be a gap of 3 years between xanthe and this baby, and i am happy with that. I like the idea of xanthe being that much more independant, and able to cope with sharing that much better. There is a gap of 5 years between my brother and i, so i dont know anything about small gaps.

We had planned on there being about 2.5 years between our children. However we have now held of for the the next one until late next year so there will be at least 3.5 years between Andrew and the next one. There are 2.5 years between me and my sister and throughout school it annoyed me a lot, but now we are older I really enjoy having the small gap between us - even if she is in London .

Jacobsmama, we are about to start doing exactly as you have done. Zac is nearly 7 months and I am still breastfeeding him and haven't had a period yet - I am going to start weaning when he is around 8 months. Were you on the pill? (Hope you don't mind me asking). Just wondering as I am going to stop taking the pill today so I might get my period...maybe??

Hi, We have a gap of 20months between our two. Main reasons for doing it were, So they would be close in age and hopefully good friends, and also as i want to be a SAHM the closer they are in age, the sooner i go back to work.

I reckon it all depends on your "life plan" in a way - If you want to go back to work when the youngest is in Kindy / School or if you want to be a SAHM for 8 - 10 years etc etc
Arna is 2 and we are TTC # 2 - this is only cause of complications from having Arna we can only start now - if I had it my way I would've TTC when she was 9 - 12 months old!!
There is 4 1/2 years between me and my sister, was hard growing up as when she got a car I wanted one (even tho I was 12!!) and things like that but we both grew up VERY independant but are really close now.
My best friend and her sister are 18 months apart I think - and her sister is the youngest but started uni the same year as my mate which pissed her off... There is quite alot of competition between them!!

In saying all of that - You could start TTC # 2 now and still be trying in a year (I hope not but that is the reality with some) so then if you planned 2 years between kids and it ends up being 3 years!!

ARRRRRGGG There is so much to think about!!! I guess when the time is right I will know, but I'm so clucky that I wouldn't mind if it happened tomorrow and neither would Jase. The only thing putting me off trying now is that I want Alex to be a baby, not have to be the big boy if he isn't ready too. Thanks guys, its really interesting hearing all your stories!!

Don't worry nicola-ann, I am very clucky but I am holding off as we can afford another April baby. So we can't TTC until at least October/November.

we decided when we got married that we wanted 20-24mths between our kids. main reason, like others is so they could be mates. there's 2yrs between myself, my big sis and my lil bro and we are all really close. dean's brothers are both older than him, 5yrs and 7yrs (i think) so he found it really hard to form a relationship with them when growing up as they were always into different things.
jack will be 2yrs and 2mths when this bubs is born and i think he should be ok with having a new bub around.....touch wood!

Well after our little mistake (it's not all that bad now it has sunk in), there will be a gap of 2 years and 10 months between Andrew and the next one.
