Well we went to stay with friends last night and what a mare. I had a mission getting the boys to bed. Jaidyn went at 8.30 and Keegs at 10. their usual bedtime is between 6.45-7pm. Jaidyn woke at 12 upset so had cuddles then wouldnt go back to sleep. Ended up making a bed for hom on the couch and me on the lazy boy. He ended up falling asleep at 2am. The at 4am Keegs came down and sleep on me - not the best on a lazy boy. they woke at about 6.30 which is their normal time.
Anyway the last time they did this I ended up drinving back home at 2 in the morning as I was getting really stressed. its so hard when you are stayong at some one elses house and your kiddies do this.

they are good as gold at home 95% of the time so its really frustrating when they do this. it makes me not want to go away with them. They have been doing this for about 6mths i suppose but that last 2 times were the worst.
Also my friends husband keep making snarky comments about the boys being up late which I was letting happen so they didnt scream the house down as they hubby doesnt like that either. Anyway I ended up being tired and grumpy today as well as the boys so pretty crap weekeknd for all.

So has anyone got any ideas of how to make this a nicer experience for all involved....please....pretty please.

You could give them special sleeping bags and make an adventure out of it. Give them test drives before hand by letting them sleep in the lounge once or twice in their special adventure sleeping bags...that way they will have something familiar to sleep in but also have an adventure away from home? Sometimes putting them to bed early rather than keeping them up later actually helps limit the screaming. I have found that there is a one to two hour window when I have to have Andrew (and Sean when he was smaller) in bed by, otherwise they get into over-tired overdrive and stay up all night.

Good luck!!!

they go to bed with their special bed mates so thats covered. I try to put them to bed around their normal time and its an evening of me being a yo-yo. In the end I set up a bed on the couch for them which eventually worked but it was the waking up again and the screaming that really did it. And when Jaidyn was doing it I really didnt want to put him back into bed by Keegs and have him wake him so I had 2 to deal with.
They really used to be good about sleeping anywhere until the end of last year so I dont know if its a 2 year old thing with them being at that up and down age or if they really dont like sleeping anywhere else other than their beds.
I guess its a combination of having to top and tale, things to fiddle with in the room (even though I try to remove as many distractions) wanting to be nosey and hang out with us and probably picking up on me being tense about the whole thing. Who knows but I really dont want to do that again. I feel like I have the worlds worst hangover and its all from lack of sleep.

You can get little toddler beds which are a sleeping bed and mattress all in one. I think they were in the latest fly buys reward catalogue, so I'm guessing that places like the warehouse or k-mart might stock them? They come in Winnie the Pooh and Thomas the Tank Engine etc. If you can making sleeping in them a special treat for boys that can go to sleep quickly and quietly you might be able to trick them into going to sleep without a fuss?

I think you just have to persevere Marlene! Maybe try staying over somewhere a little more child-friendly? (Or when the hubby has gone away?)

Hopefully it's just a phase and they'll get better at sleeping away from home soon

Thiose toddler bags are really cute but I'm opretty sure they are about $70-$100 each, so depends if your budget can stretch to that (mine couldn't and I only have one). I'm outta ideas!

Yeah, Liz, that's about the price of those toddler beds. We've got one for Josiah, but that's because we happened to get it for $10 when one of the Hamilton Warehouses was shutting down and they were clearing out all the stock. Its a sleeping bag, that is attached to an underblanket that is basically a bag type of thing that the airbed goes into.

As an alternative to the whole thing (and what we are doing for Kiya): cute sleeping bag (often on special for $10 at the Warehouse) and single airbed ($15-$20 at the Warehouse) and flag the underblanket thing!
