Topic: Breast Pain Posted: 01 November 2008 at 10:34am |
Hi Ladies,
One breast seems to be really suffering, I had a bad graze on the right side and after seeing an lc she has helped with the latch and it is healing, it still hurts when he latches on but my whole breast really aches for some time after feeding, like an hour or two.
The other side is just fine and I am finding when feeding I am wussing out and going for the other side first but he normally needs both side. Is the pain normal or is it something I should get checked out, seeing my mw on Monday just wondered if anyone else had this?

It could possibly be a blocked milk duct, they hurt like hell!!! if it is it should pass in a few days if not I would get it checked just incase theres a infection as they can get rather nasty.
Good luck

I did wonder, have now had a hot shower and massaged it a bit and it feels a bit easier, will keep an eye on it - why do they make breast feeding quite so painful

That sounds like what happened to me, and I had mastitis, went to the doctor and confirmed it. I was given antibiotics and its cleared up.
I had not long stopped breastfeeding when this happened though and have heard that you can get rid of mastitis by feeding off that side lots...

Oh yes i had wondered about feeding lots of that side, but seriously it takes courage and I am being a big chicken i go to put him on that side and then change my mind - i managed this morning though and will offer it first at the next side, i will i will.
Will ask my mw tomorrow don't want to leave it.

Sounds like a good plan. Not to be a scaremonger but if you notice any redness around the sore spot then give your midwife a call straight away or go to your local after hours coz blocked ducts can progress into mastitis and mastitis is a particularly fast acting infection - I went from noticing a red patch to being hospitalised in less than 6 hours.

fiona, how did you get on with the mw? what did she say? is it like the shooting pain we were talking about? coz i only get it in my right breast. it's almost like it's filling up, but it's constant & i have to hold it but even that doesn't help much. is that what you were/are getting? be interested to hear what your mw said bout it?
