Topic: Is Elevit making you feel worse?? Posted: 13 October 2008 at 5:04pm |
So I thought Id just put it out there and see if anyone else has had this happen. I dont want to cause a rukus, and put people off it... I think multi Vitamins are a good idea.
However-
I have found that since stopping taking my Elevit 3 days ago, I dont feel as sick. I also used to feel quite sore in the kidneys in the night, and in the morning (after taking Elevit with dinner). And my pee was always REALLY dark, often throughout the day (I was only peeing 4 times a day after drinking 2 litres). Now I pee more often, and its more normal.
Also- I dont have 'such' strong aversions to food now. Particularly veges.
Anyone else had anything similar?? Or am I really paranoid?

That's really weird. It's not uncommon to have a reaction to supplements though. What about just sticking to good old vegies and perhaps taking an iron supplement? I take the blackmores supplements.

Don't worry, you're not being paranoid. My sis found she got very sick with pregnancy multis because her diet was already sufficient.
If you have too much iron in your diet it can make you feel sick (too much of a good thing ). I didn't bother with any multi's last time until at the end when my iron stores were low, same this time the only supplement I'll take is folic acid unless recommended otherwise by my LMC (and only if recommended because blood tests show deficiencies).
ETA: since you've stopped using elevit make sure you get a folic acid supplement, we don't get a sufficient amount in our diet even if we eat lots of leafy greens and you should be have 800mcg per day until the end of the 1st trimester (it's about $3 on script).

I have heard that from one other person. I think elevit is a waste of money anyway. I just took a pregnancy multi and folic acid on script from the docs

I know that i cant have it because of the iron content as i have heamochromatosis - (too much iron already) so it may be that one of the vitamins or compounds in elevit is already high in you.
Maybe worth checking with your Dr or Mw re kidneys maybe a urine flow test? to check they are functioning right they may have been struggling to break down all the extra vitamins - not 100% sure on this only a suggestion

Thats interesting about the iron- I had bloods done- they showed I had really high iron stores (ferratin) and really good haemoglobin. I was eating healthy before feeling so sick.
I was also amazed that it had 800thingies of folic acid... thats HEAPS.
My mum said she cant take them- maybe I should listen to her too lol!!

Shannon, How did you find out you had Haemochromatosis? Did you get a specific test?
My mum has just been diagnosed with it and as a result has permanent liver damage. Also explains her infertility issues. That makes my mum and three aunts (from both sides of the family) so they want me to go for the test too. I don't have any symptoms but mum didnt at my age either. Scary stuff.

That's the most important part of the vitamin. It's how much you need to have per day in the first trimester Docs/MWs give scripts of just the 800mcg of folic acid to all early pregnant women

I too have stopped taking elivit, my MW suggested I take it as I was so sick - but it made me feel so much worse!!! What a waste of money!
Im taking 5mg of Folic acid - which I think is a huge dose but the gp prescribed it and the MW said it was fine!

Muz 5mg of folate is usually for women with a family history of neural defects. So yes it will be fine

Elevit have made me feel awful - but multi vits have always had that effect on me. I am a bit paranoid to stop taking though as with the MS my diet has been anything but well balanced!! I have started taking them with dinner and it has been a bit better. I might try the Thompsons ones and see if it makes any difference.
Has anyone had to take calcium supplements - I am lactose intollerant and don't do the soy thing...

Danaj - You get a blood test which takes approx 3 weeks to get the answer, they send it to chch
my brother also has it and my sister is a carrier - most of the time males are more likley to get it and females more likely to be a carrier of the chromasone.
RubyG - i take the lifestream calcium supplement its very good. I get it from the health2000 shop

I have heard some bad things about Elevit. It is mostly so popular because its made by a pharmaceutical company that can afford to advertise on TV etc.
I have also been told by more that one nautropath that the levels of folic acid are way too high and then the other stuff is too low.
There are plenty of other preg multi vits on the market that are much cheaper and contain everything you need. But eating healthy is also important.
Your pee will be dark from all the vit B in the multi vits but then you should still be peeing alot and it not be too dark if you are drinking 2 litres of water a day.

My specialist asked if i was taking folic acid and i said yip in Elevit - he said as soon as i hit 12 weeks stop taking it and save myself a dollar a day! Didn't sound that positive about it at all.
I tried the blackmores ones - MS seemed worse but may have been a coincidence, I did notice the blackmores ones had loads of fish oil in them - that was enought to maybe make me feel ill.

I found out today from more people (another midwife) that a lot of women feel worse due to the iron in it. Totally stresses out your liver... and with all the other work its doing- its getting clogged with filtering off too much iron.

^^ Yeah it's horrible stuff, if you're eating a balanced diet then the extra iron will make you feel worse.
What do I do with the rest of the bloomin pack, they're so expensive?
