Topic: gestational diabetes Posted: 16 October 2008 at 10:17am |
Hi
I am currently waiting on results for gestational diabetes. My first test came back with really high glucose levels and then a few days later the urine test thing I do each time I see my MW came back with really high glucose levels. I have been for the 2 hour fasting test and these are the results I am now waiting for.
I was wondering if there is anyone else who has GD and what they are doing to keep it under control. I have done lots of research on the internet, but I wondering if there is specific advice re diet etc. that I should know about e,g, any particular foods thats I should avoid or foods that I should eat alot of???
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has /had had GD.
Thanks!

Hi Aimstar1 I was diagnosed with GD a month back. My MW referred me to the diabetic clinic straight away, where you will be seen by a dietician, diabetic specialist MW, obstetrician and diabetes specialist physician (lots of people). There you'll get an information session on diabetes in general and about diet & exercise to keep your blood sugar levels under control. You'll also get a little machine to test your own blood sugar levels several times daily, so you can monitor your levels to see how you're doing. I was lucky and could control it through diet & exercise only, but if that doesn't work, you might need some medication or even insulin - depending on how you're doing.
With the diet you basically have to stick to a well balanced healty diet, no sugar, no chocolate or fatty junk food, less carbohydrates (you won't believe what's all counted as carbohydrates...) and lots of vegetables. It's hard at times (especially when the cravings kick in), but I was determined to control it without meds, as I was hoping for a waterbirth and if I needed meds, I would have to go to hospital to birth and they don't do waterbirths there, so I learnt to handle sitting around a table at family birthdays, while everyone was eating chocolate birthday cake - you just have to think about bubs' health, it works! (But I promised, as soon as this bubs is out, I'll have a piece though... yummmm!). Oh, and another hint - stress causes blood sugar levels to rise too, so relax and take it easy - took me a while to figure that out...
Good luck with the results though, sorry for all the blurp, but I know exactly what you are going through and I was frantic for info at the time too, so I hope I could help a little...

Thanks Dani08
I have just got the results and I do have GD my MW has said I will be contacted by a specialist team from NSH probably next week and that I will most likely be induced between 37 - 38 weeks.
Hopefully I hear from the spec team soon as I want to get onto sorting this ASAP.

aS BECKS HAS said there are lots of subjects on GD...
I got it with rhylz. As Dani08 you see alot of people and they let you know the things you should of shouldn't eat. Your fingers will look and feel like pin cushions after a while from all the testing.
I controlled it with diet and exercise too.
Don;t always beleive when they say you get induced as if everything is going ok and size of baby isn't too big (as alot of GD babies are big sizes) there is normally no reason why you can't wait till baby is ready to be born (there is always the exception though)- which is better for baby and a natural labor is alot better than an induced one.
My midwife was very happy for me birth naturally and when baby was happy to come when he was ready.... rhyley had different ideas,,, he was born by ceasar cause he was breeched... he was 9lb 4oz a week early but i have big babies anyhow,
You will most probably have a growth scan at 35 weeks (which they estimted Rhylz was 7lb then)

as long as you are good and cut out all the bad foods your pregnancy should be fine. (theres always exceptions though)
And after having Rhylz - no more diabetes - I get checked everyyear now - its recommended and its free (is for me cause of GD history)
My only worry is if I get it again if we decide to have another child... cross that bridge if it comes to it though.

I have just heard from my midwife again and Auckland Hospital has contacted her to say that she cannot look after me anymore and I will be under the care of specialists at Auckland Hosp as my results were really bad/high???? No one from Auckland has contacted me so I guess I am waiting till Monday now. Also they have said due to my results diet alone will not help and I will have to inject myself each day with insulin. I have definitley had my moments of thinking what next? but at least I know I am in the best care..........when they contact me that is!!!! I so wanted to have my midwife there but I cant, she said she will do my post natal care though and if I need to have a cry and talk to someone that I can call her, which is really nice. I have also been told that I will be induced in about 7-8 weeks time, I really did not want to be induced early as when your body is not ready it can take days and be even more uncomfortable than labour is already!!!
Oh I so need a chocolate bar or an ice cream right now!

what was your result?(there should be levels that are over 7 or 8 to indicate GD) i am suprrised without doing further tests and monitoring your results that they are talking that you can not be looked after still by your midwife (I got looked after by my midwife with an ob overlooking it - then had to go OB way cause of breeched)
I am sorry but it seems a bit dramatic of your midwife and care to do this straight away to you - but then maybe they do things differently up there?!

My first polycose test was 11.1 and then the 2nd test the GTT, with the 3 bloods taken were even higher. Once the results were sent onto the GD specialists they contacted my MW to say that it was so high that I am considered high risk and have to go to Auckland and she does not have access there plus I will be with a specialist team. My MW has had no control over it so i dont think she is being dramatic just doing as she is told. My MW will still do all post natal care.

oh don't think I was calling your midwife - sorry if came over that way.
I just thought you sounded rather disappointed that your midwife couldn't do the care thats all.
ETA: just looked at my notes from Rhylz and said from the first glucose test I was 10.1 - didn't say the second one though... so you never know its not too far off your first test result you MAY control with diet alone- if you want to try make sure they let you - if you want to avoid insulin injects that is.

if you do have to inject yourself make sure you ask for the needle that you cant actually see the needle go in, I used that one and it made it sooooo much easier. I was petrified of doing it but in the end the insulin injections were better than the finger prick testing! I was induced at 38 weeks and everything went perfect. you will probably have heaps of scans now, they do them every two weeks to see how big bubs is growing. Dont stress to much by what they say at this stage, I found you see a different doctor a different week and they have a different opinion.... there is no set in concrete plan when it comes to GD (and pregnancy in general i guess) and some doctors think its more serious than others so try not to worry

I'd like to my mw refer me to some specialist, and I really hope so, because I am just not quite comfortable with my mw. because in my previous appointments, I though she should weigh my weight and test my urine everytime, but she didn't do so, the only thing I been examed is the blood pressure and the heartbeat of my baby. My sister got a baby boy, her midwife didn't take care of her like this.

My midwife never checked my weight but did take measurements of my belly (and I preferred this didn't want to be reminded how much weight I was gaining LOL) But midwife did do a urine test every time.
If your nt happy with your care jayceeeee then discuss it with your midwife and if still not happy ask to be referred

my first midwife did do the urine test everytime and measure me and even though I said i felt huge she said i was right in line with what I should be. i never had any glucose tests with her and it was only picked up when i had a show and went into hospital for a check up and he was prem and huge.
second time round, different midwife, she did the urine test everytime and nothing came up but we did an early GD test at 26 weeks and that showed GD so I dont think the measurements and urine test are really to accurate cos it sure wasnt for me.

Copy form my post in Dec thread, in case anyone is interested.
Well I went to Akl Hosp for appt today, luckily DH could come with me as we were there for 2.5 hours and there was so much info to take in, plus we had a scan. From now till next Wed I have to do the finger prick blood test 4 times a day, and really watch what i am eating, I am pretty much doing all the right things but need to make some minor changes. The scan was to check bubs growth and all measurements were normal right on average for dates so that was great. Next Wed I see the 3 different specialists and could be there most of the day, plus they will make the call as to wether I go on Insulin. I will not be going to Birth Care as they want me to stay there, but thats okay with me as I should have my own room plus dont have to pay for meals and can stay as long as I want. Just had to test my blood now and it was 9.2 had a little cry cause it is meant to be 6.5 or less and I ate such a healthy dinner. Heres hoping it gets better.

Oh i had GB. I had to see a special midwife too i saw her at the super clinic in manukau she was lovely. Also saw thje 3 dif specialist and the ob i saw ended up being the same one my sister had when she was pregnant with my neice (she had a twin sister but she died )
and when i saw the nutritionist lady she said what i was eating was great and i had thought i was eating bit too much!
They realised i had it at like 36 weeks so didnt really do much cause i had Briahna at 38wks They told me at 36wks she was about 7lb 12oz
i never got weighed at all either. Not for my whole pregnancy.

Its good you took someone with you - it can be alot of info inone go.
As for your high level when being good - I was like that - I remember being so good - not having sugar etc... then testing after a chichen burger dinner and being 15 - it was the white bread I had no clue that woudl break down to sugar
