Topic: Breastfeeding Advice Posted: 06 October 2008 at 8:09pm |
Ok, well I have decided that I am REALLY REALLY going to try and breastfeed Caden again.
I tried the medela supplement Nursing System a while back with no luck, he DID bring milk down but he hates the little tubes and stuff.
I have been thinking about this alot and I really want to try and breastfeed again, I went to Baby Factory today and looked at electric breast pumps, I also spoke to someone at medela and asked them what the best type would be for my situation. So I have a Medela Swing, it was $300 But if it works it will be worth it! It stimulates for 2 mins then it expresses, so the lady told me to keep stimulating until I see milk then express.
I also have some homoeopath pills called "Milk Flow" to take and Im going to have my complan and banana and my spirilena smoothies.
Im so determined to get my milk back!
So I just need heaps of support and heaps of advice!!

Good on you for giving it a go again. The medela swing looks like a great breast pump and when I was learning to express I found some good info on the medela website and also through La Leche League. Good luck, I hope everything goes really well for you and Caden.

Im going to ring La Leche League and see if I can get some help, also, when my lik does come back in Im going to get help with latching so we get it right from the start!
I had a very rough start when he was born, I had every MW at Middlemore latching him on a different way and I left there with ripped up nipples.

Sheena, I would also suggest you see your GP and ask for some Domperidone, that will help increase your milk supply, however Caden will need to "help" you buy feeding off the breast, so if you decide to go down that route, you would be best to take yourself and Caden to bed for a couple of days, and just feed, from my own personal experience it took a couple of days for the milk to come thru.
Also see if you can get a LC to come out to you and give you some help.
Another thing, that breast pump you are looking at, I have the exact one sitting on top of my wardrobe, I probably used it a total of two weeks.. PM if you want too

I agree with Mel, domperidone is fabulous stuff! You should definitely get an LC in and going to bed to rest up and feed on demand is an excellent idea, just buy/make some freezer meals and get yourself a few mags/dvds and a good book and have a few days off all other housewife stuff while you get the feeding sorted. Also not sure why but apparently the more night feeds you do the greater your milk supply is during the day (something to do with hormones).

You could try pumping just before you go to bed for the night and again as soon as you wake up (if he's not awake for a feed yet). I'd definitely not wake him if you don't need to.

It hadn't completely dried up but it was pretty much on it's way out... after I started taking the Domperidone for a few days, I was able to get 50mls.....Is Caden going on to you ok?? Or does he seem reluctant or confused? I confused poor Cooper

Umm he seems confused! I tried tonight and he just fussed and cried and made little winey noises. Its like he knows there isnt anything there.
I hope Im able to get my milk back.
With the Domperidone, how big are the pills? I cant swallow pills No matter how hard I try I just cant, I wonder if there is a liquid form or if I can crush them....I so badly want to breastfeed again.

Best of luck Sheena, I agree with the others about taking the two of you to bed for a couple of days, do nothing but feed and feed (get some lanolin cream to put on sore nips!), drink around 3ltrs of water a day, 3 meals 3 snacks and the complan drink you mentioned is a really good idea. I dont know about the Domperidone stuff but I used Fenugreek to help with my milk supply and I hear good things about Blessed Thistle, not sure if this is available in NZ but its a liquid so it might suit you better...

If they dont post to NZ then I'd be happy to buy it for you and post it over and you can transfer the money to my NZ bank account.

Good luck Sheena! I found the Milk Flow great when I was expressing for the gremlins.
The other thing with the expressing is to take it really easy coz you can do a lot of damage to your nipples, mine were destroyed after 5 days of expressing for lil miss' tube feeds last week and are still recovering. If you start out slowly/gently your supply will build up gradually and you shouldn't have too many issues with sore/cracked nipples.
Good luck!

Sheena, you can call the pharmacist about the size of the domperidone. I don't really remember (it was 2 years ago when I used it) I don't remember it being particularly large though. If you do use it do you have a pestle and mortar so you can make it into a powder, that may be easier for you to take.
