Hiya,
I've done a search but can't find the thread that had all the opinions on bassinet vs straight into the cot. Anyone know what it was called or remember where it was?
If not, do I need a bassinet or will straight into the cot suffice?

Can add to this? Has anyone tried the sort of hammock things? They really appeal to me but I have no idea if they are actually any good.

Can't remember the name of the thread, but thought I would add my 2cW
We put Blair straight into a cot, we just rolled up some cloth nappies into 'logs' and placed them down either side to make it feel more confined and snuggly. We also thought that seeing we're both tallish that we didn't know how long he would fit into a basinette for, and that the money we could/would spend on the bassinette could be used on something else.
We were fortunate that the cot could fit into our room, (with some items removed) as we had decided that we wanted him in with us for the first 6 months.
At the end of the day, I think it's personal preference. If you want to move bubs around the house for sleeps eg lounge or other bedrooms then a bassinnette that is easy to move may be the way to go

If money is a bit tight a cot will be fine. You could always swaddle bubba is she is too unsettled in the wide empty space of the cot. Or like Blair's Mummy suggested use nesting. The other option is using a moses basket inside the cot to start with. They are a bit cheaper than a bassinet.
I would love to get a hammock, have heard great things about them but you can't use an apnoea monitor with them and I am far to paranoid not to!

It really is a matter of preference I think. If you do go for a cot, see if you can get one that has the option of setting it up at bassinet height to begin with - makes it a lot easier to reach in and pick up bubs while he or she is still little. But even that is only a matter of convenience

We did bassinet first and will do this time as well. I had a bassinet on wheels so that I could have it in the lounge during the day and then in our bedroom at night. If a cot would fit in our tiny bedroom then I may have just gone straight into that. I did like having him in the lounge during the day though as it made things easier, it also set him up well for learning to sleep anywhere no matter how much light or noise etc was going on around him.

we had a moses basket for both of our poppets. They were in them for about 3 months from memory. Very usefully to be able to move the basket around the house during the day (especially with DD2 so I could put her somewhere out of DD1 way  ). At night we put the moses basket in the cot so they were both used to sleeping in the cot from the start so when we transitioned them out of the basket into the cot it was not so strange for them. However I found that both slept much better in the cot so for night sleeps they were in the cot from about 6 weeks.

I like the idea of getting them used to sleeping anywhere. We're not a noisy house hold but I really want to avoid teaching bubs to wake up at the sound of a pin dropping. We have a dog and sometimes two on the off occaision so hopefull I can teach bubs to sleep through the odd bark. She'll have to get used to them as furbies out number the humans in our household

My dogs bark right outside Spencers room, its where the side gate is and they like to tell passers by off, and he sleeps through it. They soon get used to familiar noises. The dogs use to sleep through Spencer screaming the house down when he was a newborn as well, I could have killed them just peacefully sleeping away

I know a lot of people who put there babies straight into the cot, and there is nothing wrong with that.
I wanted a bassinet so I could have him right next to me at night, so if he cried I could just reach my hand over and put his dummy back in or whatever. It was very helpful in those early weeks, especially cos I had a c section it meant I didnt have to get out of bed, Id just sit up and lean over to get him out of the bassinet to feed etc.
ETA- Oh and I agree with having them get used to sleeping through noise. I can go into the bedroom with the vacume cleaner and caden sleeps through it
