Topic: Lazy feeding Posted: 28 September 2008 at 6:38pm |
Jackson has all of a sudden taken to doing really short, quick feeds. For about the first seven minutes he'll suck like crazy, with lots of good swallowing and a big wide mouth, and then all of a sudden he will ease off.
He then pushes much of the boob out of his mouth, until it is pretty much just nipple and starts doing little, tiny sucks and no swallows. I try all the normal stuff - tickling his cheek, squeezing my breast, talking, moving his arms and legs, but he just seems finished. If I then take him off, I can't get him to show any interest again.
All up, feed are only lasting about ten minutes and I am worried that he will not be eating enough.
Has anyone else had this? Or just had a really efficient feeder or something? He was back to birth weight in seven days, but now I am stressing that he's not getting enough. He does seem to be getting to the hind milk, but I can't be sure. It is almost like it gets to difficult so he doesn't bother.
What should I do?!?

Laurie I think you'll find that he is getting more efficient at his feeding and filling up quicker. I wouldn't worry about it. Once he starts licking and playing with your nipple, take him off and move him out of feeding position, so that he learns not to play there but only to feed there. You could also try stretching the time in between his feeds if you wanted to.

Yes, thanks Teresa. I guess I'll know when I see my midwife on Friday... hopefully he continues to put on weight well. He doesn't seem hungry or angsty. Just me!!!

I agree with Teresa, sounds like he knows what to do and is getting good at it! Lil miss is a super efficient feeder, 5-7 mins max is all she's ever done. You may also have a fast/strong let down too which means he gets plenty in that first few mins, that's what mine is like, it literally pours out the sides of her mouth so she gets a full feed in a really short time.

I guess I'll become more confident as I go along. This first baby is a constant learning curve - I always have so many questions!!!
How are you and Chiara getting on Emma?
