How do you deal with night time wakings? At this stage they should be sleeping through the night, and had done so, but have been restless the last few weeks, might start another thread on that actually.

Aoife woke up with a dirty nappy at 2am and wanted to party when I put her back. Which if she was in her own room I would have let her but her activity was waking Eimear.

I ended up giving her a bottle after an hour of trying to settle her. Even after that it took another 30 minutes to get her to sleep.

I don't want to reward this by putting her in our bed, which is where Eimear ended up 2 hours later anyway (but she was unsettled for different reasons, damn onions in her lunch)


I'm just wondering what others do in situations like this?

first there is no should with regards to kids... my 3 yr old still doesnt sleep consistently thru the night and at that age was waking for a feed nightly.
i have both my boys in the same room, they chose to from an early age, and i know that when toby scream/tanties etc in the middle of the night it very rarely wakes gabriel... and i am sure that emma has said that quite often if one twin wakes it doesnt always wake the other up either.. i guess it is just a matter of them getting used to and ignoring night noises.

sorry that isnt helpful really is it?!

I can't be of first hand experience, but my sister-in-law just lets her babies fuss in the same room. At first they woke each other, but within a couple of weeks the twins would sleep right through even the high pitched screaming of the other....

Maybe she's just lucky?!?

I've left mine in the same room too. Sienna has always been a tricky sleeper and Mercedes has learnt to sleep thru it so 9 times out of ten she doesn't wake when Sienna plays up. It is a really tricky situation tho.

If Sienna wakes and we go in and resettle her she usually goes back to sleep after a brief cry/scream. Mercedes will sleep thru the screaming but often wakes when we go in to Sienna. In fact Mercedes will fall out of bed and get straight back up and into bed without waking, it's just seeing one of us in the room that wakes her up.Once Mercedes is awake she is absolute dynamite to get back to sleep so it becomes a balancing act- settling Sienna without waking Mercedes.

Other people have suggested separating them at night but in the long term they have to share a room for logistical reasons so I figure we just need to tough it out now till they sort it out. Plus, if Sienna sleeps thru, Mercedes does too. In a perfect world I'd put them in separate rooms and hire a sleep consultant to come in at night and retrain Sienna but it's not a perfect world so I just have to make do with what we've got!

Good luck with the girls, hope tonight is more settled for them!

So grin and bear it eh! Pretty much what I expected. It's just been a long week i guess and last night was just one of 'those' nights.
They can go to sleep no probs if the other is shouting.

You're right Bizzy, should is the wrong word. They have slept through since they were 4 months old so the expectation is there for them to sleep through and let me get my sleep

I intend on keeping them in the same room Emma. At least as long as they don't try start WW3 on each other

I used to look after twins in the states when I was a nanny, and one would scream the entire time through the day sleep and the other would sleep through it, until you took the noisy one out then the sleeping one would wake because there was no noise! So we just left them to it, they seemed to sort it out .

Noah and Lola share a room to normally we just let them scream it out, Lola never wakes up Noah, but if he wakes then she will sometimes wake up and is a pain to get back to sleep.

So we just leave them they have the choice of going back to sleep or screaming, sometimes if its really bad and I can't stand the noise we drag out the portacot and the noisy one goes in there
