How much do you pay for an hour of babysitting?

Was going to say the same.
If we use a friend or family member we usually buy them dinner and a DVD to watch or sometimes give them a gift instead of money (as they don't want paid)
We have a couple of people we do a swap with. ie then you babysit for them one night.

Id probably pay a flat rate rather than an hourly rate but Id make sure it was fair to both the sitter and myself.

for eg I might pay them $40 for the evening but would make sure I was home at a reasonable hour so I might be out from say 6pm to 10pm.

I think if I was paying an hourly rate I would be too busy looking the clock and not able to enjoy myself

Yea I'd go with the evening rate too - such as, we expect to be back by 10pm does $30 sound ok? Or whatever amount you decide.

I don't like to stretch the budget too far for babysitting otherwise I know it won't keep on happening. It's hard to drop a rate after you've started!! That said, we often do well with rellies or friends who are happy for babysit swaps or just to use our internet/DVD player etc.

Whenever we go out though, the youngest is already in bed and the older ones usually are too.

that certainly makes a difference if the person doesnt need to put the kids to bed. depending who you ask some people will be happy for a flat rate, others wouldn't be. but that all comes down to who they are, what you need them to do, & how late you will be. (this is coming from me being a qualified nanny & having heaps of babysitting clients)
