Topic: Told it was girl BUT Posted: 21 September 2008 at 5:27pm |
Hi, I am new to OHbaby and I am 23 weeks pregnant. We were told at our 20 week scan that there was an 80% chance that I am carrying a girl but they would not confirm 100%. Has anyone else had this? We were thinking of having a 4d scan to see if that can confirm but not sure if it can or not. Oh this is confusing we just want to know so we can get a bit organised. Any suggestions or help would be great

Hey pickle, congrats and welcome to OB
I guess with scans they can never be 100% when it comes to girls. Boys are a little more obvious
I was told without a shadow of a doubt that I was carrying a girl because of the positioning on the scan, but I have a workmate who was told 80% chance it was a girl - and it was.
While a 4D scan would certainly be a lot clearer in that department, you're not guaranteed to see in there, if you get what I mean.
Personally, I wouldn't have one, just to find out the sex. I don't like the idea of the 4D scanning technology, but that's just me
Plus, you'll have to pay for it (around $100, depending where you go) and not all cities have the facility to have one done.
But good luck, either way
**eta: When you say "organised" I assume you mean "So we can buy pink or blue stuff"?
There's a tonne of beautiful neutral coloured things out there. Plus, once the baby is born, you'll be inundated with girfts of sex appropriate colours. So even if you just bought all the basics in whites, yellows, greens etc, you'll be covered.
As for the nursery, do the same, but just add a few boy/girl touches once baby arrives.
I hope that doesn't sound negative...

at my scan the lady said she was 80% sure it was a girl but "to keep all the receipts incase" . So if I wasn't already sure it was a girl I wouldn't have bet on it. But right from early on I thought it was a girl and my mums been saying its a girl from day 1! SO with that I'm 110% sure
what do you "feel" baby is?
I totally understand why you wanna be "organised"! We were the same. It's just fun!

at my first scan at 18 weeks they said it was "more the likely to be a girl " , then i had another scan at 36 weeks (had gastroenteritis and demanded one since i was at hospital anyway) and that was def a girl ....six years later, the more likely to be a girl , was definetly right

Yeah we were told 80% which was correct the first time (still waiting to see if it's true this time), and I have friends who were told the same percentage and it was correct for them also. I imagine the "80%" is just a standard figure they throw out there because like everyone says, it isn't as obvious as it is with a boy.. so yeah, it's nice being organised, but you can't always know for sure without a later scan.
My husband still has fingers crossed this one is a boy..

I've got a friend who had a baby recently. She was told at the scan she was having a girl. She wasn't given a percentage. Anyway, she had baby and it came out a boy!!

This doesn't sound negative....but not everyone is in a situation where they will be inundated with gifts.....I know we won't.

Hi Pickle, congrat's & welcome to Ohbaby.
80% is quite a high percentage & Like mamapickle said boys can be quite abit more obvious. Then again just coz the sonographer didnt see a penis or scrotum can not be ruled out completely... It is entirely up to you if you want to have a 4D done but then thats not guaranteed to give you a toilet shot & the best time for 4D's to be done are around 28-32 wks. Im not sure how your LMC works where you are but you should have a growth scan at around 32-34 weeks,
I know of a couple of sites that show heaps & heaps of boy & girl scan pic's & you'll be able to tell the difference after looking thru them...You can even post your scan pics of toilet shots and even nub shots & ultrasound techs take a look and let you know what they think, but do bear in mind that if the shot is not clear or wrong position they usually wont make any judgements..
I'll pm you the sites if you wanna go and have a looksi...

If I were you, instead of buying a lot of baby clothes at this point I would set up a savings account and put the baby clothes money into there. Buy yourself about 6 singlets, hats, booties and onsies in neutral colours (they are still pretty cute and you can put coloured booties/cardies with them anyhow), and after baby is born you can go mad on shopping!

My friend was told she was having a girl, and out popped a little boy!
Even though on my scan I could pretty much a see a "little boy" I was prepared for the fact that he could have been a girl.
But whatever the sex of your baby you will instantly fall in love when you first see it I did

with my first i had hyper-remisis so i was in hospital for a wee bit getting fluids via iv, they did a scan at 10 weeks to make sure bubs was growing well and told me it was a boy! i didnt know to trust it being so early, his bits wouldnt have been fully formed at that stage, so i asked at my 20 week scan but the sonographer refused to tell me because SHE didnt believe in knowing before birth!!! i was too shocked and shy to argue and it wasnt until i got home that i got angry about it. i rang the clinic and sent a letter of complaint, all they told me they were sorry and if i still wanted to find out i would have to pay $100 for another scan. looking back i should have done more but the 10 week scan was correct and i got my boy.
With number 2 i was determined to know for sure but i got an 80% chance it was a girl. frustrating, but i was optimistic and bought lots of pink and thought girly thoughts, now i have my little girl
Just keep your receipts, buy a blue cardie just in case and relax. bubs will come soon enough then you will know for sure!

nikkiwhyte - hehe we'll see lol
sonyaw - I know what you mean. We dont know many people and so im not expecting anything. and having a 9yr age gap we are having to get everything again lol. So hoping a scan later on will let us know what we are having.
Alianasmummy - Thats terrible. But I'd probably be the same; not say anything but fume at home! I recon they should have offered a free scan for you! She shouldn't be pushing her beliefs onto you. I wonder what was said to her after your letter and if she changed her ways.

At my scan I was first told 90% its a girl, then DH made her look again near the end of the scan and she said 99% its a girl, so if its wrong she must be really blind (although we didnt see anything looking like a boy)

LOL Jess
At 20 weeks Keziah was hiding her girlie bits so we couldn't see them but at 30 weeks we went for a sizing scan and she had her little bum and fanny pointing at the camera and there was NO denying that she was a she LOL

Hi
I guess no one will ever tell you the gender 100% - cos they are not allowed to. Even if you have a 3 or 4D they will probably only give you a percentage.
Also, telling you the gender is not actually part of the examination - so they are not obliqued to even look.
.
My advise would be to keep all your receipts for baby stuff just in case you buy for wrong gender.
80% is pretty good odds - if they could not see they would say that they could not see the gender. They would never just guess.
Good luck

We feel pretty sure we are having a girl but at the scan all the lady said was it looks like a girl to me but you can never be sure until it's born. So off I went to buy pink. I think when they say they are 80% it's more just their way of covering themselves in the unlikely case of a mistake.
They are really good at farmers for exchanging things if you have bought the wrong colour or in the case it's a big baby and won't fit NB size clothes.

I'ts always 50/50 no matter what they say. I got told I was having a girl @ 20 week scan, then at my 38 week scan a week before I had baby, I was told I was having a boy....and alas I did lolz.. So next time I'll still ask, but only to amuse myself!
