the only suggestion I have is prune juice. Or boil some prunes and give him the water.

I posted this in the July babies thread, and I haven't tried this, but one of the girls from my antenatal class has and apparently it got literally instant results. A traditional italian remedy she said. Get a stalk of parsley, rinse it in boiling water to clean it, and poke it you know where. She said it all came gushing out immediately (so you might want to have bubs on a nappy and wear rubber gloves if you try it!).

Oh yeah, and if you try it, I'd love to know if it worked or not

I know a common remedy for constipation in little babies is brown sugar in water but not sure of the ratios, I had to do it with Sienna last week and was told 1tsp dissolved in warm water but it might be less for a small baby.

Is he FF? If so, you need to offer 50mls of water in a bottle per day (after a milk feed, not in place of one).

Otherwise the suggestions above might help.

I'd start with just cooled boiled water.

As he is so little I dont know if I would try the sugar one. Oli was constipated from around the same age, we tried several things.....anal massage (not the nicest job, but worked sometimes), rubbing his tummy, prune juice (just stew the prunes and then dilute the juice from that into cooled boiled water - about 1:5 ratio of juice to water), and in the end we had to give him lactulose to get him to go. We actually saw a pediatrician about it to make sure there was nothing more serious going on....we prob used lactulose for about 2 months on and off.

Michaela was on lactulose for a few months too but she was much older (1yo) when she became anal retentive which led to constipation.  We used lactulose and a variety of other tricks to keep her poos too runny to retain.  These included brown sugar and water, diluted prune juice (we bought a bottle of prune juice per week and she had a cup of diluted juice everyday), diluted kiwicrush (not sure if this is safe for littlies but Michaela had a cup of this everyday too), diluted apple juice and lots of other liquids.

If you're BFing you may want to avoid foods that contribute to hard stools such as bananas, if he's on formula have a chat to your chemist or plunket nurse/midwife about different formulas to try.

I eliminated wheat as it would take Eimear 3 days of crying painfully every night to pass the poo.

We used to lie her on her tummy , either on the ground or across my lap, and rub her back. This would help get some farts out. If we did this before a feed it would help make space for more

For the brown sugar it's 1tsp of sugar to 50mls of water.

Also there are some acupressure points near your tailbone that help with constipation. I'm not sure exactly where though but I know it helped my friends baby.

My mother swears by stroking/ massaging babies thighs applying pressure downwards towards the knees. I told a friend about this last week, and she said it worked. Can't hurt to try.

I'm also curious about the parsley - i've got some in the garden and could give it a go on A for a laugh! She had a bit too much banana and has slowed down a bit!

Thanks guys.   I'm not to keen on trying the parsley thing but have managed to get a good poop out of the little man this morning by frog legging his legs (iygwim) The mw told me to try this on her last visit and it worked a treat this morning. Alex was much happier afterwards (not that he gets to upset he just groan heaps)
