I know of a lot of people who get their baby's ears done at 1yo. I don't know what's too young but I think I would go for "when you are old enough to look after them" (which includes, putting earrings in/out and showering all by theirself). I think I would be inclined to wait until much closer to puberty!

Maya got hers for her third birthday coz she asked for them, she had a friend with earrings so she was a bit fascinated.

I went with Kels when she had Alize's done, he would have been just over a year old?

I think Roksana had Zaara's done quite early, it's a cultural thing maybe?

I got mine done when I was 2, but DH says Lauren can have hers done when SHE asks, no matter how old she is. That makes it her choice. I tend to agree with him.

As far as I know there's no medical reason why parents can't have their children's ears pierced early so I think it's a personal choice - each to their own and all that.

My sisters and I were allowed to get ours done once we were 10.  DH and I have talked briefly and I think he will allow it once Michaela's older (12 or 13) and I have no objections to making her wait - then again she does have him wrapped around her pinky so I guess we'll wait and see.

I quite like what T said about getting their ears pierced once the child's old enough to maintain them themselves.  Michaela puts up enough fuss getting her nails cut and hair done I'd hate to have to clean her ears with white spirit too.

Yeah If I had a daughter I would wait until she asked for them definitly. I wouldnt get them done cos I myself wanted her to have them.

I just think piercing a 4 week olds ears is mean cos its bloody hurts having it done! I had my thrid holes done when I was 16 and I hurt like hell lol

I guess the advantage of having it done so young is that they have memories like goldfish and so they won't remember the pain.  I bet it's the mum that suffers.  Personally I had issues having her shots done and when she had to have bloods taken - I don't know that I could handle sitting through her having her ears pierced, not before she's old enough to understand that it's going to hurt IYKWIM.

Anyway, she won't need earrings at the convent

LOL I haven't got mine pierced but now that I've survived a few births and a c/s, I'm ready for it - now I'm just putting it off until I can properly afford earrings so that buying too many earrings won't be too much of a temptation for me. I never wanted mine done as a kid because they use needles!!!! That was enough for me!!!!

But I hear ya on listening to a child cry etc... I find imm's hard enough and that's something for their own good, not for fashion. Although I did think that when children go to get their ears done, they usually do both at once? Maybe I got that wrong.

I had both my children in Saudi Arabia and the boys get circumcised at 2 days old (we didn't have Zac done) and the girls get their ears pierced at 2 days old (we didn't get Samara's done). The nurses couldn't believe or understand why we didn't want them done.

Both my girls got their ears done at 5mths and Alize had his done at 10mths. Emma was with me when Alize got his done and that boy did not even shed a tear. Lesieli slept thru getting her ears done just a frown crossed her face and Mercedes cried for less than a minute, as soon as I stood up with her to give her a cuddle she was rubber necking to see the pretty colours in the shop. I am very lucky with all the kids. my kids have never had any infections, they have never played with them of anything.

I was done at 5mths also. Personal choice I guess but I am happy with my decision and would get my next children done as babies as well.

I've never even thought about this until I read this post. Amazing how many different thoughts there are on it. Mum made me wait till i was ten but that was because I was a clutz and she said I would rip them out playing at school. And what do you know.....I ripped one of them out and tore my ear doing a death roll on the jungle gym. Guess mums really do know best lol.

Just don't do what I did and let your older sister do yours while your parents are out for dinner. Earrings in that ear still sit crooked lol.

As well as doing nails for donkeys years, I've also been a piercer for nearly 7. Now, tricky one this. Legally, you're not allowed to have your baby pierced (unless it's for religious reasons) but because theres obviously a parent/guardian with them you can.
Piercing a baby with the normal gun is terribly bad - as we all know (or I hope you do!) the reason your ears get infected is because with the gun it stretches the skin to make a hole, and with the peircing blade (the needle) it cuts thru to make a hole, is 100% more hygienic and easier to take care of! You also dont get the throbbing pain afterwards.
Anyway, I personally wouldnt pierce little kiddies, moreso because they're a pain in the ass and move way too much - if I had a daughter I would have them done early. They have a better chance of healing up properly, and she can always take them out if she doesnt want them. Also, then you can take them out at school and they wont close up as fast!

Its the done thing in South America to do baby girls' ears pretty much at birth. They also shave the babies heads too. The earrings are so you know its a girl baby. A friend of mine from Argentina had her baby here, and it had a thick mop of black hair, but they couldn't find a hairdresser willing to shave it, so they left it. They also decided not to pierce her ears because people here would think they were mean! I know her family back home were confused by the photos of the "hairy baby with no peirced ears!!" She went back to live when the baby was about a year old, and got her ears pierced before she went back so she'd fit in at home. So it can be a cultural thing too.
I personally wouldn't do it until they were much older, but thats just my opinion

my mum got my sisters ears done when she was 4 and she winged so much that mum decided to get mine done earlier so i had mine done at 1yr and i barely even realised.

If i have a girl i will get hers done at about 5 months obviously for my liking and if she doesnt like it when she gets older then she can just take them out.

I thought about getting Bays ear done the other day (because DH has 3 sleepers in his ear!) but im in 2 minds because he has rather big ears (i say that in a loving motherly way! lol) and i dont want to emphasise them!

I would NEVER get a baby/toddlers ears pierced. I think it's cruel & quite pathetic actually. There is the risk of them getting ripped out or infected. Why would you even risk that with a baby?? I can't believe mothers would actually do that to their babies because THEY think it "looks cute". Why not let them decide for themselves when they're older?
