    Posted: 19 August 2008 at 2:57pm
I have got really bad ezcema all over my arms, back, neck, face, behind my ears and in my hair line. Have just been to docs as i've been using lemnis fatty cream but it hasn't helped and he said I can use steriod creams and a different emollient so I already have all those as Spencer has them, so that's great and I've also got to go to the lab and have a skin scraping to check for a fungi. He didn't want to give anti fungal cream unless it is actually a fungal infection which he doesn't think it is but there is a suspicious patch on my arm so he wants to be sure.

Anyway I haven't had ezcema since I was a child and I haven't changed anything like washing powders or eaten anything that i think could have caused it and he said that normally ezcema and asthma get better during pregnancy not worse so he's not sure why i've got it, has anyone else had a flair up during pregnancy? It started about 2 months ago but has got steadily worse until it was annoying me so much I had to see the doc about.

Plus does anyone know how to stop scratching, he said normally they would prescribe and antihistamine (sp?) but again they don't like doing that during pregnancy. I told him I would just try not to scratch and he told me I had been scratching the whole appointment. I didn't realise I was doing it

Poor you cuppatea!

I thought asthma and eczema was sposed to get better not worse in pregnancy too. But having never had eczema that I can recall, I have got it in my elbows at the moment! My doc didn't seem too concerned by it at all, said it's really common for your skin to change during pregnancy and be more senstive. I also had a reaction to a scrub last week while I was getting a pedicure - have had it before with no probs, but last week my skin decided it didn't like it!

Mine's not bad enough to need anything really. I try really hard not to itch but it's hard in the heat. I'm sure I scratch without realising it too

Sorry, no advice, but just wanted you to know someone else has eczema that seems to be caused by pg too

Hi! Yep I also had excema as a child- used to be awful but it had settled down to a degree as an adult. Since pregnancy though it is back even worse than I ever remember it!!! I have it almost everywhere too- legs, arms, hands, belly and boobs I can't stop scratching even after I start bleeding, and nothing so far works to fix it My doc has referred me to a dermatologist so hopefully I'll get an appointment soon... The boobs are the worst... they are constantly weeping and bleeding and then get stuck to my bra where I rip off skin getting them unstuck- gross I know!

Mine came back a bit in the 1st tri but emu oil sorted it out here's a link;
http://www.silberhorn.co.nz/emuoil.html
You could check with them to see if it's ok to take the capsules during pregnancy, I don't see why not though. It would just be easier to swallow capsules than rub the oil on all over our body twice a day!

I'm using the oil on my belly and it REALLY helps the itchiness! It's the ONLY thing that has ever worked on mine and my sister's ezcema (and her's was really really bad!)

This is just copied from Jan mummies

Hey ladies, well have been to the lab to have a skin scraping, doc wanted to check for a fungal infection, lab guy is pretty convinced that is what it is and said its quite normal. Is a yeast that can go mad, apparently changes in temp like we have been having here in christchurch can cause it and he said being pregnant can cause it to as sometimes the immune system goes a bit mental. He said the steroid creams the doc has given me will fight both the ezcema and the fungi but doc will probably give me an antifungal cream as well. He's recommended a shampoo for me as well to get the bits in my hair line wheres its difficult to put cream on so i'm feeling a lot better about it now. Having a plan always helps.

If all that doesn't work I will try the emu oil

Glad you got answers cuppatea, I have it really bad on my arms from elbow down and my hands, I know it's not as severe as some of you ladies but it's annoying all the same, i cant stand my arms being covered so therefore I have to show my ugly arms to everyone but oh well, life goes on. I use heaps of lemnis & aqueous cream which gives me some relief, Oh well only 16 more weeks then it will go away hopefully...

I get excema through my pregnancy and used my normal steriod creams. I was told it wouldn't hurt the baby but I guess it is always in the back of your mind.

I also found my asthma got worse during pregnancy because I was carrying extra weight and my organs were all squished up. I was sucking on my inhaler everyday but as soon as I had DS I didn't need it anymore. My lungs must have enjoyed having their own space back lol!

Anyway, Im rambling....I'm glad you have a plan of attack and hope it gets better for you soon

I wonder whether something homeopathic would work?

Nathuropharm (sp) might have tablets or sprays. I know they have a good allergy spray.

I get ezcema quite bad during pregnancy so I wouldnt presume that it should get better during pregnancy. I have found that following the days after your labour that it will get better.

I suggest trying a coal-tar based cream which acts as a barrier to oxygen, stops skin drying out and helps reduce itching. Also any moisturisers that arent perfumed such as QV cream etc help to keep it moist and remove itching. If want homeopathic - try Lucas' Pawpaw ointment.

I also found that ointments rather than creams work better as they kept skin softer, less water in them to evaporate.  I also spoke to a rep from Natropham at one of the parent and child shows and she said to help with the itching soak some rolled oats in a muslin bag and keep in the fridge when you get itchy dab it on the itchy part.

Something I remember using when I was a child also and used to always have a small batch made up in the fridge for the night time when I would get the INSANE itches was pinetarsol solution mixed with some cold milk & either soak my hands or feet (which used to be the worst for me) or use flannel to apply to other itchy parts

I thought it was just me. I've never in my life had ezcema, but since a few weeks now I have a rash (and itching) in my elbows. When I asked my mw if this could be pg-related, she said she'd never heard of it.
Good to know that there are other people who've only had it during pg.

Although I feel for those of you that have it really bad.
