Topic: Did I already ask this? Posted: 11 August 2008 at 4:41pm |
Ok, I don't think i've already asked this but please excuse me if I have. Brain is a bit of a mush at the mo.
How long were your bubs in new born nappies? I'm starting to buy when I go to the shops but they only go to 10 kgs so I doubt they'd be in them long. 1 week? 2 weeks? 1 month? Just an estimate would help me not to buy too many.
Cheers

I was wondering this too, although I have a nice little stash of cloth nappies building up in the spare room, I am planning on doing sposies for the first few weeks.... How many roughly would one tiny little thing go through in a day?

Weights did not work as a very good indication for us at all cos you change as soon as baby starts wetting through Josh grew really fast and was out of them by 2 weeks and from 6 months he is now in walkers but i know some whos babies were in newborn for ages. I prolly wouldnt buy too many and i would rather stock up on grocery vouchers if it was me and only get a box of newborns and a box of infant (you'll end up using them eventually) and use the vouchers to buy more nappies once baby arrives that way you dont need to worry about not having money for them on one wage and dont end up with overstock of nappies that dont fit

erm I don't think newborn nappies go up to 10kg, did you mean 10lb. Spencer isn't 10kg now and he is 14 months.
I would maybe buy one large box worth and then more of the next size, I found we had to go up to the next size way before he had reached the weight it was suppose to go to. The voucher idea is great.
As for how many nappies a newborn goes through I would allow at least 10 a day, they tend to poo at every feed and 10 feeds a day is pretty average (Spencer was on 12 feeds a day but he was little and fed every 2 hours most would go a bit longer between feeds)

Good question. I've got about 6 packs of NB nappies and am now waiting to find out what sex bubs is and will get infant ones. The grocery vouchers were a good idea

We went through about 8-10 nappies in a day and a night for the first few weeks and she was in NB for 4 weeks then they started to leak so it was time for the next size up Most disposable nappies NB is up to 5kg and alot of babies are born around 4 lol so you get the pic... they don't last long

Rather than grocery vouchers why not just dump the money you would spend on nappies into a savings acc so it can earn some interest for you. Then instead of stocking up on nappies which may not fit or be the right fit for bubs at least you money is doing something rather than sitting in a voucher or a bag.

I was wondering what brands of nappies people have found are best. I have a friend that said that Treasures leaked all the time and that huggies were better.
Also what baby wipes... I have heard some are thicker than others etc...
I have no ideas this is our first!!

All sposies we tried (i had tons of samples) leaked in that first week. We moved to cloth at 2 weeks old.
Don't stock up on baby wipes much as some bubs have really sensitive skin and even the sensitive wipes can irritate. All sposie baby wipes dry out Daniels skin and make excema flare up. So it's better to wait and see what skin type they have

I prefer Treasures to Huggies, I have tall, thin babies (apart from lil miss who is short ) and the Huggies are quite short in the rise and smaller fitting in general.
Chiara is still in newborn nappies now, she's about 4.5kg, but they're getting on the small side. We've been thru 1 x box of newborn Huggies and 2 x packs of newborn Treasures with intermittent cloth use as well but when they run out I'll be buying the next size up. She'll be going into cloth during the day once I've used up the newborns, I just needed to get them used up before she outgrew them.

Funny, Ella was long and skinny too, but we've found Huggies the best fit by far, and Treasures were always useless on her! I wonder if it depends on their legs too - I noticed babies with thighs seem good in Treasures but they never came close to sealing around Ella's skinny legs, so she leaked every time. It's trial and error really, seeing which brand/s work on your particular baby.
As for how many to buy? I'm getting a box or 2 of newborn Huggies for this one, and then I'll have to wait and see. Ella was in them for a fair number of weeks, and went through about 12 a day.

I am planning to buy 4 boxes of 104 Huggies to start with and ten buy a few on the next size up.
It all depends on Baby...I didnt go by what the KG it says on box as DD always needed a bigger size even tho her weight was with in that of box....
But I know we will quite easily go thru 4 boxes and might need more!!

We had about 300 NB nappies and still have approx 100 left. Jack was in NB size for maybe 6 weeks? He was 3.48kg at birth but was really small, just heavy. NB was swimming on him for ages (almost came up to his boobies!).
I would wait too, buy a few packs of nappies but don't go overboard. Supermarket vouchers or a savings acc would be better cos then you get what you need when you need it.
As for brands, huggies is good, treasures is fine for Jack too although doesn't last quite as long. Only the giggles though, the ultra (the more expensive one) is crap because it doesn't have gussets and Jack's pee would just run out (not good when you're in the line at the PostShop and you get soaked ). Each baby is different though. Also boys wee at the front and girl below so that's why from infant they have the different gender ones.
Wipes: huggies are really potent. I tried them out on my face, because if it irritated my face, there was no way I was putting it on my baby's bottom. I find huggies, while they're thicker, they sort of wipe the poo around instead of actually picking it up. Plus they're so expensive. Jack's in cloth so we use cloth wipes, but when he's in disposables (like at mums house or something) we use Loving Touch wipes from countdown. They're only something like $3 for 80 which is pretty good. I also use them on my face instead of facial wipes cos they're just as good and leave my face nice and smooth.

I love huggies. Daniel was 9lb 4oz, is now about 9lb 7-8oz and we've just moved him to infant nappies. Treasures leaked more than huggies. We had one 108 box of newborns and used them in 2 1/2 weeks. The cheapest I've found are nappies.co.nz (2 boxes of 128 infants for $100). We use wipes when we're out (all gifts or freebies)but use baby flannels at home.
