Topic: Any way to stop milk coming? Posted: 07 August 2008 at 5:49pm |
Sorry didn't know whether to put this in pregnancy, mums or whatever so thought I'd put it here.
I recenlty had a breast reduction and reconstruction due to severe pain on my right side throughout my life (sleeping in a bra/propped up etc). I couldn't breastfeed due to this, and other, factors.
Next time I will put bubs straight onto formula, but just wondering is there any natural thing that doesn't affect baby that you can take before or after the birth to hinder any sort of milk production? I had a wonderful supply last time and was leaking from 17 weeks. I'm so so nervous about my breasts growing again as if the pain returns, I don't qualify for another op and it will be $7000 to get the breast fixed. Is there anything I can do? And for FF mums from birth, what did you do, if anything?
TIA

I thiknk there is a Naturpath product called milkstop but not sure if that is for after milk has come in or if you can take it beforehand. I'm sure if you rang a chemist they might be able to shed some light. All the best with TTC.

Emz, there is a medication you can take straight after birth to stop your milk coming in. I took it and didn't leak or get any milk but then didn't leak thru preg either. i can't remember the name of it but your MW or GP will know. I don't know if you can take it during preg tho, am thinking probably not. Its only 1 or 2 tablets...can't remember.

Thanks ladies.
Thanks Peanut... yeah I doubt there's anything I can take while pg but oh well all the best for bubs and all.
Did your boobs go down after having Mac? Cos I remember I gained 1 1/2 cup sizes before my milk came in last time, but don't know if that goes away or not? At least now I have a small bust it won't matter if I go up to a D maybe!

Your midwife will be able to put you on something to stop it coming through.

I think its also a wee bit of mind over matter, Emz. I knew I was never going to breast feed so think that helped with the milk not even coming in. My bra size never changed. I comfortably wore my same bras the whole way thru my preg but am a DD anyway.
So probably not much help to you at all!

I didn't bf at all and I took milk stop tablets made by naturopharm straight after birth. I asked at the health shop I got them from if I should take them before birth or not, but they didn't know and it doesn't say anything on the pamphlet you get with them, but I guess you could check by ringing them or going to their website.
I still got milk and leaked while feeding my daughter but it was over pretty quickly within 2 weeks. I bandaged myself over my bra and wore the bandages 24 hours a day only taking them off to wash and change bras and I never let water from the shower get on them, ie as minimal stimulation as you can. I didn't have a lot of pain with the milk drying out either, just a little bit when they were engorged. But I never had any signs of leakage or milk coming in prior to getting pregnant either.
My breasts have gone from a D to a DD, but they did that from early pregnancy.

emz this might not work at all but when I was drying up my milk supply I put cabbage leaves in my bra - not on the nipple but around the rest of the breast. It definitely relieved that tight sore feeling and apparently it does help to dry up milk. Something to do with constricting vessels in the breast. It might be a really silly suggestion but thought I'd suggest it because I think it did work with me. It's also something you might be able to do beforehand - although I'm sure I ended up smelling of cabbage!!

KA - they usually only give meds if you are not BF from birth. If you have already started or want to give the coloustrum(?) then they won't give it. I got it within about 1 hour of giving birth.
Emz, seen you are using my MW next time, she will be happy to give you the meds as she was sweet giving it to me.

Apparently its not as effective and its better for your body to dry up naturally if your milk has already come in e.g less issues and side effects if your body does what its suppose to do.

Worked for me (not that I had much to dry up ). When my milk first came in I had whopping big boobies that were as hard as rock (I'm normally an E cup and I couldn't get my maternity top over them, that's how big they got!), Mum told me about the cabbage leaves and that they helped to relieve some of the pressure. I only had the leaves in for a few minutes and it was bliss! Then when I stopped breast feeding but was leaking dribbles of milk I put the leaves in my bra for the whole day (yes, it makes you stink! LOL So don't go near anyone else! ) but I've never had a leak since then.
Good luck

Thanks ladies! I'm just hoping like heck that I won't go up too much next time as I went from DD to F, then back down to E-F... then I had my reduction and went to a C. Wouldn't mind a D if I had to go there, but now I've got my boobs fixed I'd rather not have the milk come in. The pills sound good Peanut. Now just have to find out as soon as I get pg so I can book the m/w or 'someone' might steal a spot off me
