Topic: kicking the habit Posted: 10 May 2006 at 9:35pm |
my little girl is going to be 2 next month and it is time to get rid of the dummy. she only has it when sleeping so i guess this means a few broken nights ahead as she learns to settle without it.
just wondering what you other mums did when kicking the dummy habit with your littlies?

I think Blair was about 18 months when i got rid of his dummy, he started bitting holes init so i thought i would take it of him before i buy him a new one and he was fine.
Not really sure of any advice for you, maybe she will be fine without it and not kick up a fuss at all. Hopefully this is what she will do but if not i guess its just a matter of hanging in there till she forgets about it. Good Luck, hope you don't have too many bad nights.

Ummm... Kiya "lost" hers, and I found it under a chair, but I let it stay "lost"... she asked for it a couple of times, but I just told her it was lost and that she was a big girl and didn't need one anymore. When she found it herself a few days later it was all gross. Kiya brought it to me, and told me it was "icky" so I told her to throw it out, and she did! She asked for it again a day or so later, but was happy that she had been the one to throw it out when reminded.

You could try having a 'Welcome to being a Big Girl' ceremony where you say goodbye to the dummy and bury/throw it? We had to do that with Sean's blankie that was getting a bit too haggard - except we welcomed him into being a big boy...

My cousin did the lost trick with her girls as well. her daughter threw it off the deck so my cousin told her the birds ate it. It seemed to work!

thanks for all your suggestions guys! lol caitlyn's mum, i did wonder whether ella would find her thumb to keep the sucking habit but she seems to have taken to sleeping with her mouth wide open instead!
we put her to bed on wednesday and she asked for it, i told her that it was gone, in the rubbish bin because she's a big girl and doesn't need it anymore. off she went to sleep and woke up 20 minutes later for a bit of a yell about it. after resettling though she slept all night and has the last 2 nights as well. naps are another story though.... i'm REALLY hoping this isn't the end of her day sleeps

Oh I remember my mum having to kick the dummy habit with BOTH of my brothers at the same time...She tried the "lost" thing & that worked with one of my bros but not on the other so she ended up making the teat smaller & smaller (thanks to a handy pair of scissors!) until there was pretty much nothing left of it.....hehehe

I think Janine did something neat with Paris, but can't remember what it is, so I can't pretend that it's my own brilliant idea.

My friend had a friend who had a baby so she told her daughter that the new baby needed her dummy. Took a few nights but each time she reminded her she had given the dummy to the baby and she was happy with that.
We've been lucky so far, Kobe never took to the dummy and I dont think Addison is going to be a dummy girl either. we do however have an issue with bottles and sleeping!
