I had BP problems with Luke in the last few weeks of my pregnancy - ended up being induced 10 days overdue and with BP around 160/100.

Decided that we would go with a different MW this time (long story) and so have been trying to find someone.  Went to see one on Friday and she took BP and it was 160/90.  (At the beginning of pregnancy with Luke it was around 140/80)  What scares me is that she didn't seem too concerned...

After talking to DH and my mum we are starting to wonder if I am better to go with an OB?  Or be referred to one by MW (thats what happened last time) Just wondering what the experts out there reckon?  Also, can you have both an OB and a MW?

Most OB's work in conjunction with a MW, but you can only have one or the other as your LMC.

I had a m/w as LMC with an OB as back up with the gremlins, I saw my m/w for standard appts (mthly then fortnightly etc) and the OB monthly from 14 weeks. The OB also came to see me both times I was admitted to hospital antenatally, and was there when my induction started and at the actual birth. My m/w would call him during the pregnancy if she had concerns too for example when Mercedes growth looked a bit suspect. It was the perfect compromise coz I wanted to have a m/w as LMC but needed the reassurance of having an OB on hand.

You BP is actually fine at the mo which is prob why she isn't too concerned. The top number is kinda irrelevant and its the bottom number that is the most important. They only start to stress about BP if the bottom figure goes 30 above what it was at the start of preg so yours was 140/80 at the start if if went up to ?/110 then they would be testing your pee, blood etc.

As Ginger said above, most MW have a ob that they will refer you to if needed, or if you choose to.

Have you tried talking to your MW about your concerns?

Or, how about seeing your GP in the first instance (since all preggy care is covered in the first little while), and ask him what he would recommend?

Could it of been because you were a bit nervous???

You can ask your new MW to have a read of your notes with Luke and then have a talk about your BP problems.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Theres 1 that has started his own clinic in AK that looks pretty decent, has options so you can choose how involved he is... Im still TTC but plan on maybe using him once things are all go..(or if things dont start happening after awhile of trying..)
He has one of those 3D scanners which are so cool too :) - www.drdavidbailey.co.nz
I think that as it'll be my 1st I'll just feel more secure having a OB around, even though probably wont need one.... will just make me feel better....
