My little treasure is 7 months old and she is fussy when it comes to meat. I am concerned because I don't want her getting iron deficient.

I have tried all the cans and jars and she gags and then they all come back up again.

She loves her vege mash but I'm just wondering what everyone does with meats. How often do you feed them meat? Tried ringing plunkett and they were most unhelpful. Grrrrr

I've heard of boiling mince and eewwwww......liver. I just can't bring myself to do the liver thing!!!

What do you guys do?

what about making your own...my girl hasn't had canned food but is loving homemade stuff

I have been steaming meat and then putting it through a blender and then freezing it into ice cube trays and then just mixing it with her mashed veges.

I have slowly started giving her what we have for dinner just cut up a bit smaller so it is easier for her swallow.

Why not give her meat finger foods and let her decide if she wants to eat it... aria farm beef and lamb chips are really good.

i used to get the little cans of lambs fry baby food and freeze that in ice crube trays and then just add one to her veges. i did all the veges myself. the other thing i have heard with liver is you can freeze it and then grate it into their mash.

My Plunket nurse told me recently that you only need to offer meat 3 times a week. But we've been giving either beef or chicken pretty much everyday (he loves it).

Another way to get some iron into them is to give baby muesli.    

As for recipes - I just made up separate batches of chicken & beef & froze them. I cooked the meat with some water & veges (kumara, celery, pumpkin, courgette - anything really) & pureed it. It looks far nicer than some of the tinned stuff, IMO

I used to boil up the meat in the crockpot, put it in the blender and then freeze in ice cubes. Jack is very good with his food and I didn't have to mix meat with his veges but you could mix them to 'disguise' the meat or add a gravy or sauce

I am using the Aria Farm Meat chips for Oli as finger food, and he likes sucking on them more than actually eating them!

We are lucky as he eats pretty much anything, but in terms of meat we do a couple of things: keep some chicken liver in the freezer and grate it into his vege mash, just zap in m/w until all the liver has turned brown (just make sure it isnt pink). He doesnt even seem to notice that its there!  I also cook up chicken / mince with a load of veges in a pan with water and then just blitz it all up. His favourite is chicken / broccoli / beans / kumara.

The other thing that you could try is the Watties pouchs that you just mix with mashed veges.

Here are Eva's fav dishes. She especially loves the beef recipe. They're easy to make and freeze well.

One Pot chicken (ideal puree for introducing babies to chicken) – Can be frozen
½ small onion, peeled & chopped
15gm butter
100gm chicken breast cut into chunks
1 medium carrot, peeled & diced
2 kumera, peeled & chopped
300ml chicken stock

1.Sauté onion in butter until softened. Add chicken and sauté for 3-4 mins.
2.Add veges, pour over stock, bring to boil & simmer uncovered for 30 mins until chicken is cooked through & veges are tender.
3.Puree in blender until desired consistency.

Braised beef with kumera(good intro to red meat) – can be frozen
20gm butter or marg
1 leek sliced
125gm braising steak, cut into cubes
1 Tbspn flour
100gm button mushrooms sliced
275gm kumera, peeled & chopped
250ml chicken stock

1.Melt butter or marg and sauté leek for approx 4 mins until softened.
2.Roll meat in flour, add to leak & sauté until browned. Add mushrooms and sauté for 1 min.
3.Add kumera & stock. Bring to the boil and transfer into casserole dish and put in preheated oven (180deg) for 1 ¼ hours or until meat is tender.
4.Blend to desired consistency, using as much cooking liquid as necessary.

If you have a crockpot, just chuck it all in together.
