Hi all, I've been making up my birth plan, & would like to know what other ladies did, when it came to the third stage of labour.

Did u have an active one with the injection?
or
Natural (physiological management)?

what did u find were pro's & con's etc??
How long did it take 2 deliver?

Thanks

I ended up having an active third stage. It took 45 minutes before they cut the cord and 20 minutes after that the placenta want coming away naturally so had to get the injection. There was also the worry of me loosing too much blood and because of low iron i was strongly recomended againt going naturally.
I dont think I had ever discussed it with the midwife and kinda just went with the flow on the day. I pretty much did just what I was told.

With the first birth I had an active third stage and the placenta was out with in 10 minutes. Didnt really even notice it happening.
This last time the third stage was even longer than the other stages and it was very draining, especially because I was still crouching in the bath strugling to keep the baby out of the water.

Both active and I didn't even push it out it just slipped out both times.

Both of mine were active as I had been induced for pre eclampsia and it was the safest thing for me to do.

I had the jab. I just wanted that last part over and done with as soon as possible. It only took about 90 seconds. Then I was able to start really relaxing and getting over all that had just happened

Natural, don't remember how long, but it can't have been very long at all. No problems with it, so yeah.

I can see why you'd want one if there were problems, but I'd never go for it automatically...

I decided with my midwife that we would wait and see what happened on the day. If the plactenta took too long then I would have the injection which is what happened

Active with all of them. With Maya we were just going with the flow but seeing as I'd been in labour for 3 days I just wanted it over.

With the gremlins I was encouraged to have it due to the size of a twin placenta, plus the risk of haemorrhage.

With Chiara I had it coz I had a haemorrhage after the gremlins, and I ended up having another bleed so am glad I did.

Can't remember how long it took to deliver Maya and the gremlins placentas but in my notes it says Chiara's was delivered at 5.29pm which is 8 mins after she was delivered. The placenta came away easily every time tho.

Mind you, I was at a friends birth and she had the ecbolic jab and they still had to manually remove the placenta about an hour after her baby was born as it got stuck.

with Jake I had a bleed - apparently a bit major. i didn;t notice. so they injected me, placenta came and I got some blood clotting thing.

Taine i got the injection again. with the midwife we decided both times to just go with the flow and let her make a recommendation at the time. worked out well.

I honestly cant remember much of that part - I presume I had an active one - where my midwife injected me. Id had an epidural so I didnt feel anything at all. It came away pretty easily and I was just told to start pushing again and it slipped out. I think it was about 15 mins after the baby was delivered.

I presume I will be given the jab again this time being a much larger placenta with the twins.

Tom was delivered by ventouse so that automatically put me into the active line.  I dont think it took long...I think the ob might have pulled it out?  I know that I was getting stitches and Tom was still being checked by the paeds before shifting to NICU so it must be pretty fast.

I had a retained placenta with Ollie and *technically* a PPH (though I felt fine) so ended up having a spinal and having it manually removed.

Because of this I had a slightly increased chance of it happening again so I decided to have the jab with Lilia and the placenta came away fairly quickly afterwards.

I'd planned on not having the jab for it after Ella's birth unless my midwife felt it necessary, which she did because I'd pushed for so many hours that she could see the placenta wasn't going to be pushed out otherwise - plus, I was in shock by then. I don't remember delivering it being a big deal at the time, so I'd say it worked out well.

I had an active 3rd stage.  I have a bleeding disorder so the midwife and OB decided it would be safest for me that way.  Placenta was delivered very quickly after Michaela was born but I'd have to check my birth notes to find out exact times.

p.s. delivering the placenta is nothing after pushing out a baby, it just slipped out and I felt it come out but because it's smaller and soft/malleable it's nothing like delivering a baby.

Mine was natural - it came out in one push 6 mins after the birth.

Ugh, mine was retained too. They did try to remove it manually while I was awake but ended up having to remove it under GA.

I ended up having an injection. To be honest, I was so wrapped up in meeting my DS that I can't really remember how it came out.

I had an active one due to ventouse delivery, low BP and history of haemmorage in my family. It took 4 mins (no contractions felt due to very heavy block from epi) and it just kind of fell out. If I had a normal birth I would have had it active anyway - I'm not emotionally attached to the placenta so I just wanted it out and away.
