    Posted: 10 July 2008 at 4:02pm
Hey, I have a silly question.
I have had a craving for a McDonald's ice cream sundae for days. Someone told me all ice cream was bad- the frozen pots have egg in them and the soft serve is dangerous- does anyone know why?

I did have some sundaes when I was about 4 months pregnant - they have quite a high amount of calcium in them (I can't stand milk) and I am OK so far, I didn't see anything about them in the safe eating while pregnant book.

Does anyone know for sure? (I am reaching the point where the food I can't eat list is starting to get to me and I want something different)

Thanks

Any type of mr whippy ice cream is best to stay away from, its not what's in it it is the machinery and possible germs in that. A Sundae would probably be ok as it isn't being squirted out of the machine like the cones are.
Apart from the mr whippy stuff all other ice cream is ok.

I thought the sundaes came from the exact same ice cream machine at mcdonalds cuppatea?

You want to avoid soft serve ice cream for those reasons - normal ice cream from the supermarket I think is ok as long as it doesn't have raw egg or something as an ingredient.

I'm not sure, i thought they might just be in ready to go pots. If they come out the machine then no don't eat them. Buy some ice cream from the supermarket and make your own sundae.

Oh and with the raw egg thing most commercial things have been superheated so you don't need to worry. So store bought mayo is ok but homemade isn't etc.

Thanks, so standard supermarket ice creams are OK ie Tip Top, even though they have egg in the ingredient list?

mmm sounds like I might need to buy a tub of icecream instead of just a little sundae

ETA the McDonald's sundaes come out of the same machine as the ice creams they are just put into a container instead of a cone. What if the machine had just been cleaned? ( I saw one being cleaned the other day, the said they always do it at the same time)

Not that I'm saying it makes it 'safe' or anything, but I worked at McDonalds as a teenager and still remember cleaning out the ice cream machines at closing time. You had to remove all the nozzels and everything. The liquid ice cream mix just swirls around in the top of the machine all night, and it's refrigerated.

If it came down to a dirty machine being the reason why women shouldn't eat soft serve, I'd rather eat it from McDonalds than some random Mr Whippy truck.

i'd stay away from them... the "ice cream" liquid can be kept at room temp before it goes into the actually machine. that's when all the bugs can hang out and make their own babies in the warm. not so nice.

emmakate - all soft-serve ice cream is UHT and pasteurised, as it is law. The soft serve ice cream 'liquid' can be kept at room-temperature because of this. The liquid is kept in a sterile pouch before it is put into the machine. I did a food tech paper at uni, and was taught about these sorts of things. Almost all soft serve doesn't contain eggs, and if it does, they are pasteurised.

Thanks for all the comments. I never thought there were so many risks to every day food before I got pregnant.

So lady_aset, if it's pasteurised, it should therefore be safe?

For almost all of my third trimester with Hannah, I ate ice-cream for lunch. Save your $$ and buy a tub of french vanilla!!

If you can guarantee the machine has been cleaned. Like I said in my post its not the actual ice cream that is the problem its the machine they squirt it out of.

I also said that it is UHT, so it can kept at room temperatures in a sealed sterile pouch.

yes, the machines have a lot to do with hygiene as well, but it is law for them to be cleaned on a daily basis.
