Topic: Looking for a new night nappy Posted: 06 July 2008 at 9:40am |
Any suggestions for a really good night nappy? I am thinking of maybe a fitted as I don't want his butt to be ginormous.
He was peeing through his cloth nappy (a pocket stuffed with 6 layers of microfibre and 4 layers of hemp) so moved him to sposies but he has a few times now peed through his sposie as well. He sleeps on his tummy or side.
I tried stuffing more at the front of his pocket but it still leaked and I tried a couple of different pocket nappies to make sure it wasn't cause of gaping, but nope made no difference.

You can't really avoid bulk at night time with a heavy wetter, I'd suggest designer bums fitted with night time booster, but I think they're still closed for a week and a bit.

It sounds like you need more hemp and less microfibre. Microfibre acts like a sponge so you can get compression wicking especially when boys tummy sleep

I think the Designer Bums hemp fitted nappies are FAB for heavy wetters overnight. I had the same problem with Leo until I invested in a couple of these nappies for nights. I'd previously only used pocket nappies so it was a bit scary going for a fitted, but I'm so glad I did. I also bought their bamboo booster, which snaps into their hemp/mf booster that comes with the nappy. I bought a DB merino wool cover but have since made some longies as well. I love both - Leo will wear a pj top and longies over the nappy, or the merino cover with a fleece all-in-one. I've never had a leak with this nappy - it's well worth the money and is so well made. Also Angie (DB) is so nice & will do whatever she can to get a perfect - I was worried as Leo was in between sizes so I went for the large and Angie put extra snaps on for me - but it turned out that my little chubbler didn't need the extra snaps - he wears it on the smallest setting and it's perfect. It's a big bum - but a gorgeous & dry bum!

I might give one of those a try. We did have some fitteds when he was little so its not completely new territory, just never used them over night .
How do the longies work? Cos they just look like wool, would they not get wet? (sorry probably a really dumb question but I just used bummis covers with my other fitteds)
I don't mind his bum being big but the amount I was stuffing in his pockets was getting ridiculous and I don't think it can do them much good to sleep with a ginormous butt, it would probably give him back ache or something.
Stacey I did try putting two hemp and one microfibre in so that I had 8 layers of hemp and only 3 of microfibre but it still leaked, I've also tried folding the hemp in half and having most of it at the front but it still didn't work.

Wool is a great fibre to wear over nappies as it absorbs 30% of its own weight without feeling wet. It keeps warm but still breathes - fabulous fibre that it is!
I definitely suggest longies or a soaker overtop of you existing combo. Wool was the only thing that worked for me int he end! (A designer bums cover over a stuffed-to-the-max pocket)

The longies need to be lanolised(sp?) and then they become waterproof.

Longies are just knitted wool pants that you lanolize to make waterproof. Lanolizing is easy - you just disolve some pure lanolin (which you can buy from the chemist) in some hot water with a squirt of wool wash or baby shampoo, then you add to a bucket of luke warm water and soak your wool item overnight. It's amazing! It's so comfy too as there's no rubbing or digging of waistbands or leg cuffs - plus you don't have to wash after every use, you just air them out during the day and they smell good as new again by bedtime Plus they double as pj pants which is handy in the winter! The wool might feel slightly damp on the inside if the nappy is really wet but it never feels wet on the outside, plus even when damp it doesn't feel cold like cotton or PUL might.

I wonder if perhaps they are holding it longer and then its too much at one time for the nappy to absorb?
I put a pocket over Spencer's sposie last night just in case. The pocket was dry this morning though.
I wouldn't have a clue where to start with knitting so am gonna have to save my pennies and buy a pair.

When Daniel has a massive bottle I put him in his normal night time nappy and then another empty pocket over top if I cant find a soaker just for extra protection.. and it never leaks

or apparently now you can buy a lanolin spray which makes it even easier too!
