When to stop BCP and start TTC?

BCP renewal is coming up next month, and we're planning to start TTC beginning of next year.

Can't decide whether to stop BCP next month, or continue for another 6. Been on it for 8 years, cycles were fine before hand but now I'm 35 and worried it might not return to normal straight away, but then don't really want to get pregnant in week 1 anyways.

For those of you waiting to TTC what are you doing for BC in the mean time?

We came up to a BCP renewal as well, and just decided that we should stop. I also had been on BCP for 9 years, so we wanted to give my body a break, and by crikey! I didnt know what i was missing.. Id been on it thos since i was 16 so i had no idea what my body was like before hand, cos really, what 16 year old does
We had already said that this was going to be the year we TTC, so we figured that we can use condoms until we are 100% ready or as the mood suits us

i'd get of the p as soon as you can if you wanna TTC. i have heard way too many stories of peoples cycles taking ages to come back to normal, especially after so long. if you start using condoms now, your body should have got itself back into its own rythem by the time you start.

Some of the stories of others taking a while is what's got me worried.

I think I'll have a word to DH about stopping, and using condoms gosh that will be novel after 8 years of the pill.

It seems like there's no right answer, some people take a few months to get back to normal, and others are fine straight away. I suppose you just have to decide if it will worry you if you have to wait a while longer to TTC, or you want to be ready right away.

I would be happiest not to get pregnant straight away, and being BCP free.

I want to know what's normal for me before TTC, if that makes sense.

I totally think that if you are planning to start TTC in 6 months you should stop the BCP now and use some other method in the meantime. It would also be a good opportunity to get familiar with your cycle and signs of ovulation so that you can accurately time BD once you start TTC. It usually takes a few months to sort that out.

Yep I'd come off now too. Or you could get another 6mos supply but only use, say, 2mos of it.

I wouldn't bother getting it and just the good ole condoms for a while.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I agree with everyone else, stop now. I did not ovulate my first 6 cycles of BCP! Now my GP is not sure if its from the BCP or if its me in general.

I wont be going back onto BCP until we are sure we have finished making our family. The hormone changes can be full on.

Good luck!

We also decided to stop the BCP because I was at the end of the pack, and instead of getting it renewed we just used condoms for 9 months till we were ready to TTC! And it did take that whole 9 months for my body to get into a (sort of) regular pattern so I'm glad we did that!

Maybe it would be worth it for you to stop it now and use condoms just so you can get it all out of your system!

Now i is worried ! , DP and i are planning to TTC at the end of the year, i was thinking i should come off in November, a month before ....should i be coming off it sooner ? im not anywhere near finished the pack tho ,should i finish this one and start using condoms (which DP is going to be so thrilled about , he hates condoms :-P ) I didnt realise it could take so long for your cycle to go back to normal.

Im 26 , (27 in Dec) and have been on the pill for about 4 and a half years ,if that makes any difference .

I would get off the BCP asap and just use condoms too- another bonus is getting all those artificial hormones out of your system (usually takes a few months) before you start TTC too.

No finish the pack otherwise you body won't know what its doing.

I was on the pill for 10 years and my body went back to normal straight away, only difference being before the pill I had a 34 day cycle and after the pill I have a 27 day cycle. However I did come off three months before TTC as I didn't know what would happen when I did come off and I wanted a chance for my body to get back to normal if need be.

Doctors will all give contradictory advice on this, but for me, I wanted the synthetic hormones out of my system and to get a grip on my cycle which was always irregular. I came off 3 months before. We used condoms during the high risk period for the first month, and then couldn't be bothered, so just risked it! Got pregnant month 3 as I had planned (DH had thought it would take a lot longer so took a while to get over the shock )

I was on BCP for about 13 years and only came off at the very end of our honeymoon last May. Got pregnant beginning of July - so I guess it depends. I now have a beautiful baby boy!

i'd been on BCP for about 8yrs and had to come off it because of some tests i had to have.........we were planning on TTC about 12mths later, so i decided to stay off it so my body could get back to normal.
we'd been told it could take a while to conceive as i have endo and pcos, both my kids were conceived basically the first night of trying.

i believe it's because i came off the pill earlier and we just used condoms in the mean time.      but i could be wrong, the body is a strange thing

Kelly what pill are you on? Most of them have a 4-week cycle? So I'm a bit confused as to how your current pack will last till September. I just started a pack on Saturday, and it will last till the end of July. I just wanted to check that you are not confusing a pack with a 6-month supply or something (being up to 6 packs in a box). You don't need to finish the whole prescription worth, just stop once you next get to the end of the active pills.

We're thinking about TTC early next year too, but I've decided to stay on the pill for the moment because we can't use condoms (TMI - the skin in my *sensitive area* can get quite irritated by them ), so its either the pill or nothing for us. Basically I'll stay on the pill till we are ready to TTC. I'm reasonably young (turning 27 at the end of this year), so we are ok with it if it doesn't happen right away. At this stage we'd rather things take a months longer that otherwise, than stop the pill in advance and end up preggers a few months earlier than we'd like.

Plus you never know, I might be one of the ones who is more fertile in the first few months off the pill - it seems a shame to 'waste' those months using condoms if that is the case.

On the other hand, if I went off the pill now, it would kind of feel like we were getting closer to TTC, which would be nice in some ways! Then again, I've found other ways to countdown, like hopefully the pill prescription I'm getting on Thursday will be my LAST!

Can you tell that I'm struggling with this too?
