Topic: Feeding issues Posted: 22 June 2008 at 1:54pm |
Hiya,
For the past couple of days I have been fighting off a cold and have been feeling very run down. I think it has effected my breast milk supply!! Lincoln seems to be hungry every two hours and when he latches sucks like crazy for a couple of minutes then starts fussing and crying. Yesterday we gave up and formula feed him once, he drank about 160ml then slept for two hours.
Will this correct itself or am I looking down the barrel of a formula feed baby?
Thanks.

heya nicci,
there's heaps of stuff you can do to boost your milk supply.... i posted a thread about it a while back so i'll try to find it and bump it up for you
eta: bumped... it's in this section and called breast milk... lots of the ideas in that thread work for me, so hopefully they can make a difference for you too. And remember, the more you feed, the more milk you'll make

Thank you! I am already taking Elivate daily and a milkshake with a banana, blue top milk, brewers yeast, complan and a table spoon of honey in it. I am getting to bed at 9 most nights, and Lincoln sleeps til 6am most nights so I'm getting enough rest. I eat my veges but probably don't drink enough water as I only get through about a litre a day. Any other suggestions?

You are doing a lot, well done!! He's probably actually going through his 3 month growth spurt. I remember having a freak out when I thought I didn't have enough milk, Harry ended up feeding really often and always seemed unsatisfied, but after a couple of days my supply met what he needed and it was fine... that's what the wanting to feed more often was, him getting my boobs to make more milk.
You could also try natural supplements - blessed thistle and fennel are really good.

Maybe I will give in and stop doing the housework as well. Put my feet up and watch the telly for a while. I'm sure that will help!! hahaha

Keep baby suckling as much and as long as possible. Within a day or two your milk supply will have increased, its all about supply and demand, nature has a wonderful way of making things happen.
Keep up the great work, b/f can be such hard work sometimes, I very reluctantly gave up last month and remember the hard work all too well!!

That would explain why my boobs felt like rocks in the morning those first few days after Lincoln started sleeping through the night and now they feel 'normal' in the morning.

I agree with Liz, climb into bed together and just let him feed for as long as possible...get DP to bring you in snacks and water...
You do sound like you are doing as much as possible to keep it up..

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone that contributed to this thread. I spend that afternoon lazying on the couch, I had a huge meal of veges and red meat for dinner, I drank about a litre of water and just kept on feeding him ... was about every two hours for the whole day. But it did the trick, I now have heaps more milk and Lincoln is sleeping really well, eating every 3 to 3 1/2 hours and is back to his normal happy self.

Yay!! Well done. I was wondering how you were getting on Nicci. Definately sounds like it was the 3 month growth spurt. It's such a relief when you get more milk in eh!
